Default Question about PS3 *40* Gig

Hello guys,

I have recently made my decision to use the PS3 as my Blu Ray player. I was all set to by the cheapest model - the $400 40GB version.

I have heard and read some concerns that I want to make sure that this particular version of PS3 is capable of.

And please remember, this question really applies to the 40 GB version. If there are features that higher models support that this one doesn't, please make that clear. So with that in mind, will the 40 GB version support:

* HDMI so I can watch my movies in 1080p (somebody has already told me on these formus that the PS3 will support 1080p, but since but I don't know if the model of PS3 makes a differnce I just want to verify)?

* Will it play standard DVD's? I figured it will, but I would like confirmation from people who know.

* I have also heard that there are backward compatibility issues saying that the lowest model of PS3 won't play PS2 games and that you would need a higher model to have *limited* chances of PS2 games working. Is that true?

Thank you for your time.

Kevin

all ps3s have HDMI, and they all support resolutions up to and including 1080p.

yes. all ps3s are SD DVD upconverters.

sadly yes. in terms of PS2 compatility, it goes as such:

20g, 60g PS3 - hardware, pretty much guaranteed PS2 compatibility
80g PS3 - software, mostly compatible.
40g PS3 - no compatibility.

not an issue though if you keep your old PS2 around. the PS2 games do NOT look any better on the PS3.

the ps3 40G will play in 1080p if you have the HDMI cable hooked up to a tv that supports 1080p. The PS3 40G will play BluRay, DVDs, and CDs but I dont think it is backwards compatible for the other playstation games

forget about the PS2 compatibility. new PS2 are cheap and used ones are even cheaper.

my only gripe about the 40GB is that it only has 2 USB ports and no media slot (for memory sticks, etc). to play rock band you need to get a USB hub to be able to plug everything in. and to transfer pictures or video, you need a USB memory stick reader.

other than that, for 399, you get an awesome blu-ray player, and a wonderful game console.

Why a PS3 and not a SAL? The DMP-BD30 has better audio options as well as picture quality. We can argue the "futureproof" point, but if you are strictly a movie watcher, then the BD30 is the best choice.

trying to play a ps2 game is like trying to watch SD after watching HD or blu-rays. I had been out of gaming for years and got back in when deciding to go with PS3 to watch blu-rays. In my quest to find a good RPG , which i couldnt' find, i ended up borrowing my borthers final fanatsy game (the last one they made for ps2) as I heard in was so good visually. It probably was back in the day, but compared to newer games and blu-ray it was horrible.

how about browsing internet on your HD TV, downloading free demos, trailers from life time free PSN, built in wifi and ofcourse contributing to Folding@home with PS3?

Again, all these are subjective to individual's need.

Thumbs up You guys are awesome!

Wow, you guys are fast! Thank you so much for the information.

My main two concerns were about HDMI support and SD DVD support. I'm glad to hear that they are both supported. And I didn't realize that the PS3 had upconvert capability - added bonus!! Sweet.

The PS2 backward compatability isn't that important to me really. I'm a PC gamer. My step son has like four PS2 games and it would be nice if he could play them again. But it's certainly not worth spending the more $$$, which only gives him a *chance* of being able to play them.

Thanks again for for answering my qestions, I really appreciate it. You guys rock.

I'm curious what you mean by better picture quality. The PS3 can support 1080p, which unless I'm wrong, is the best out there. Then there's price. Is the BD30 under $400?

I don't intend to hook up my pc to my living room HD TV. Nonetheless, here's my rig (keep in mind I built this about a year ago when AMD was king):

AMD X2 4800+
4 Gig RAM
150 GB 10k RPM WD Raptor HD
Crossfired ATI X1900XT's
Enermax 620W PSU
Cant remember motherboard off the top of my head.

Edit: Oh, I like RTS, RPG, FPS.

I like games like Oblivion, Morrowind, NWN (1&2), Doom3, HL2, Starcraft, Civ4, Painkiller, Farcry. Those are what come to mind at the moment.

It doesn't play PS2 games. But I've heard that it does play PS1 games. I haven't verified that first hand since I don't have the 40GB version.

I just verified this with my newly purchased 40GB PS3 It plays my PS1 games perfectly. Grant you, I only have 3 (FF7, FF:Origins and Ehrgeiz) but it worked for me

The DMP-BD30 does NOT have a better picture..if anything it is the same - as tested on the AVS forums by some freakish diehards.. same movie..same time stamp.. same everything other than player.

I use to be a AMD guy as well but with the new 45NM Core 2 Duos I couldn't resist but picking one up. What is your Vista rating for your hard drive? I'm sure it is a 5.9. I had a X1950XTX 512MB DDR4 card in my old machine but my brother begged and begged for it so I sold it to him and went back to my Geforce 6600 which is only good for displaying basic graphics in today's world.

I recently rebuilt my machine....well basically built a new machine all together with these:
Intel E8400 with 6mb cache overclocked and running steady at 4ghz
Nvidia Geforce 8800GT SuperClocked edition
2gb 6400 ram
Asus P5k motherboard
250GB Maxtor HDD (about to die so I bought a 160 WD HDD to replace)
320GB Maxtor HDD (used for storing videos, music, photos)
SATA Samsung 18x DVD burner
Antec Nine Hundred case (http://www.antec.com/Detail.bok?no=523)
it has 3 120mm fans on it with a 200mm fan at the top and it runs really quiet unless I'm gaming, I can crank up the fans to high and it actually acts as a A/C unit for my room, . My CPU heatsink has 2 120mm fans on it (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835103026)

my pc at full load only gets up to 45 degrees C.

with the graphics card at factory settings it get a 14,000 3d benchmark on one card. I'm going to give my machine over to my old pc manager for a few days though for him to tweak it, he said in a few hours he could easily get a 17,000+ higher on the 3d mark. I'm going to try and get him to overclock it to at least 4.5ghz so I can have my Vista experience at 5.9 all the way, well at least once I get my new HDD installed. My friend and old pc manager hate me because of my system, my friend has a $450 ATI X2900XT card and my manager is running dual ATI 3850 cards and they both can't play Crysis on max settings yet my machine does
