Can You Actually Build Your Own Receiver?!

I was reading some of the reviews of the DVE calibration disc DVD edition on Amazon, and there was one guy there who claimed that you're not actually an audiophile unless you built your own receiver.

Whoa... I know you can build your own computer, but a receiver? Where would you buy the parts?

Has anybody here done that? Is there a whole different level of audiophile that I am not aware off? Or is that guy full of crap?
