Default Noticible Edges in PS3 Games--Because of 1080p?

Hi,

I have a 1080p native TV, and I own a PS3. I purchased Fight Night yesterday, and I have been noticing alot of edges in the game. I could see it in a few other games, but this one is very noticible in certain areas(like the ropes for the ring). To clarify a little-- It looks like what a PC game would look like with Antialiasing turned off.

I have NBA 07 which is a 1080p game, and that looks Perfect. So I was wondering if it was because of the upconversion causing it? It may just be the game, but I didn't notice this when I saw this game in Best Buy awhile ago. But I probably wasn't as picky then. I think my TV auto-adjusts to 720p instead of upconverting to 1080p.. Is this a good idea?

Any advise is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Is Fight Night a 1080p game or 720p? Doublecheck your PS3 video settings just for laughs and make sure everything is right.

Sony NBA 07 is the only real 1080p game so far.

Hey,

Writesimply-- Still deciding haha. I was surely going to give an update when I decide what I'm going to do. Right now I am just going to make due with what I have.

JTK- No, it's not a 1080p game. I'm just wondering what resolution I should set for it to go to?

Also-- Any critisicsm on how the graphics are compared to a 360? I saw one thing defending PS3 because it's a first gen title. If that's true, is that a good excuse? In general, how come first gen titles don't look as good as later titles? Because developers couldn't work with the system since it wasn't out?

Thanks all.

Its pretty simple. Go buy a sports car and then immediately take it to a race track and record your best lap time. Keep going to that race track with the same car and 6 months later you'll have a much better lap time.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if most devs haven't even figured out how to implement anti aliasing efficiently on the PS3 yet. These are first generation PS3 games, so it's to be expected to some degree. I mean, the first batch of 360 games I played had horrible framerates, so even the 360 wasn't immune to stuff like this.

Roger. So the people who are like OMG 360 > PS3 should wait until they speak.

I was just thinking since games like Fight Night R3 which is on PS3 and 360 would be a good way to see the comparison between the two systems. So pretty much it's expected for the games to be this way now? I assumed so myself but I wasn't sure.

Everybody likes to say stuff like "the PS3 was delayed, so devs had more time to work with the launch games" and imply that these are actually 2nd generation PS3 titles we're seeing now. I don't believe that for a minute.

First of all, I don't think the PS3 was ever gonna be released in March 2006 in the first place. The final development kits didnt' even go out until this past summer. So games weren't as far along as most people thought.

Second, even if the devs had more time because of the delay, going back and making the code "better" would take too much time and resources. Developing for any type of multi core based cpu, whether it be Cell or the 360 CPU, changing the code to make better use of the cores or SPEs isn't so easily done. One small change affects everything, so in essence, you'd have to rewrite the entire game from scratch again. I seriously doubt any company would have wanted to do that. They'd save that kind of overhaul for a new game.

And finally, the games being compared are ports. Even though they allow for direct comparisons, ports are generally the worse references you could use. The problem with ports, is that they are generally made with one system in mind - everything else suffers because of this. No efforts are made to make the game actually play to the strengths of the consoles it is being ported to. That's why Gamecube ports always got the short end of the stick in the previous generation. Nobody tried to make games look good on the Gamecube, though games like Resident Evil 4 and Twilight Princess prove that it can if developers actually tried. That's what we're seeing now with the PS3. Multiplatform titles will probably never use the SPEs efficiently, nor will they use RSX efficiently, because they probably are targeted for Xbox360 as the primary platform. Also, Blu-ray space will be wasted on these titles, as most of the stuff will be transported from the 360 version as is. So these titles will probably look identical on both platforms at best. The only way for this trend to change is if the PS3 were to be the primary development platform for a particular title, though with the 360 being easier to develop for, I don't see that happening very often.

On the bright side though, games that are designed specifically for the PS3 should look awesome.

Who, me?

I bought a new Yamaha RX-V2700 two days ago now from the day that I write this.

A local contact that owed me a favor came through for me in a surprising and big way.

Needless to say: I'm beyond thrilled right now.

I was asking Weapon but I guess I killed two birds with one stone.

Post a review of your HDMI receiver. Have you played it up to 11?

In time.

Hopefully today I can finally start really digging into this thing, but it really is an amazing machine. I'm completely blown away by it in every respect.
