Default minimum core2duo for perfect playback? (no hw acc)

if you are using only cpu power for playback (no gpu acceleration), how fast does the cpu have to be for perfect playback (zero frames dropped) of any bluray title?

i've read 2.4ghz but that was before pip was available. i imagine pip requires a faster cpu?

This is the First BD enabled laptop. Sony VGN-AR190G
It has a Core Duo T2500 2.0GHz - not Core 2 Duo!
nVidia GeForce Go 7600 GT.

It has played all of my BDs great!
I have not tried the various "problem" BDs yet, and most likely won't as they are not my genre of movies.
The Wild did give me a stumbling issue but that was corrected with an update.
Surf's Up forced me to upgrade to the latest PowerDVD Ultra before it would play... but then played fine!

Here is the Cyberlink System Requirements for playback:

Hope this helps!

For best Blu Ray playback I recommend Cell Processor based systems.

you need a pretty good processor to play blu-ray titles smoothly straight from the cpu. it also depends on what decoder your using. personally, i think gpu acceleration is the way to go. ati hd 3450 is like $50 and offloads the full load to the gpu. can't go wrong.

I have a Core 2 Duo 2.2Ghz T7500 and it plays flawless but then again I also have the 8400M GS which offloads the work from the processor. Are you planning on not having a video card or something? I am not sure why you would want a system that doesn't offload processing to the GPU.

Unless someone is only looking to do basic office productivity work and basic Internet use it doesn't make any sense to buy a cheap computer with "integrated" graphics on the motherboard. Such computers can run very sluggish unless you really beef up the amount of memory on the them.

It would be crazy to run Vista on one of those stripped down machines even though plenty are sold that way.

For gaming, multi-media use, watching movies, doing graphics work and editing audio or video you really need a true, discrete graphics card with its own on board memory.

A good video card from ATI or nvidia would definitely be helpful. If the video card sucks... no cpu will be able to help you. Bus speeds and memory speed is important too to slap images on the screen quickly enough for a given frame rate. May depend on what play-back software you have too. I like powerDVD myself... don't they have a new version that'll do blu-ray?

I have this exact card and it's awesome. I have a P4 2.8ghz (single core), 1mb ram, and this card. I have Vista Ultimate with windows classic theme instead of Aero. This card lets me play blu rays at 1080p with no problem at all. Paid $55 with shipping.

Well, neither PowerDVD nor WinDVD BD are really designed for maximum performance on systems which cannot offload at least a portion of the work to the GPU. I don't know what the current requirements would be in such a case, but since both ATI and Nvidia gave the capabilities in their newer chipsets, I'm not sure why it matters. Even the latest Intel IGP can offload some of the work. If you are wanting to upgrade an existing system (in my experience) you should definitely upgrade the GPU as well to make things work efficiently.
