If I go by my memory from when I was kid, it's an easy 5 star. But if I were to critique it as an adult, I'm sure it is a 3 at best.

I think The Last Starfighter holds up really well, despite the aged special effects. The characters and story are just great, and I've always loved the design of the Gunstar ships.

I'd go for 4/5 just on the nostalgia vibe. It's a fun adventure and doesn't outstay it's welcome.

I liked this quite a bit when it was released on VHS. It is very cheesy now, and I'm not talking about the antiquated CGI. The acting is good but the dialogue is painful.

It barely holds together, especially with Robert Preston's Centauri coming back from the dead at the end for no good reason, but the reshoots that expanded on Beta are hilarious and the movie has its heart in the right place.

Also, this moment:

I don't feel bad at all about having this in my collection.

My thinking, precisely. Certainly fun but nothing groundbreaking or particularly innovative. A solid mid-range three star movie.

IMO - the only 5 star feature was the ground breaking use of CGI. Other than that - typical popcorn sci-fi movie. 3 stars at best.

Really good movie.. holds up well and I definitely saw it in theaters first run. Great cast as well.

Anyone read the novelization? I heard in some ways it builds much more on the movie in various ways.
