Default Timeline: HD DVD vs. Blu-ray Disc

http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/02/19/ft_hd_dvd_obit/

They actually put together a pretty good summary of the format war, for those you just new to Blu-ray. Recommend you check it out.

Thanks, Josh.
I saw the original Blu-ray drives in 2000 thru 2002 and Pro-cameras recording directly to BD. Talked with the Sony reps about potential future for the disc. They had some impressive plans for it. My impressions were that it looked like a winning technology.

Learned about TDK's Durabis coating not long after and the end of caddies and that looked like the right answer at the right time.

Then as companies joined the BDA, I was definitely encouraged. Matsushita (Panasonic) was a big help and at that point I was pretty sure of the future.

What I'm saying is that other companies that didn't see this coming need to fire their technologists or send them back to school or something because Blu-ray winning was not a random event.

Our company dropped all references to HD DVD today in it's marketing - it was recommending Blu-ray over HD DVD, and now recommends Blu-ray over DVD.

A movie should be made about the format war. Of course it would eventually be released on BD.

"Toshiba's new alliance with Paramount soon paid off as Transformers set new records for sales, but it wasn't enough to take that week's Nielsen VideoScan numbers as Blu-ray's defensive buy one get one free offer kept Blu ahead by a mere 1 percent -- the closest Red ever got to winning a single week since December of '06."

I can't wait to tell my kids, I was one of the guys who spent a lot of money for this bluray BOGO, simply historical

Odd that this laptop, the first BD enabled laptop, wasn't mentioned.

http://www.gizmag.com/go/5640/

June of 2006 this model went on sale in the U.S.
The Dell laptop mentioned, was available in Dec 2006.

Ah well... Thanks Josh!

I didn't realize the dvd forum and Toshiba didn't like the caddy idea which caused them to pursue making their own format. Had TDK come out with the coating 3 years prior when they voiced their displeasure we might be further along with blu-ray now.
