The majority love the PS3 here and it is extraordinarily versatile. Stand alones offer more robust construction and design when it comes to just being a player and can offer quality on a different level:
From Ultimate AV Magazine on the Pioneer Elite BDP-94HD:

"The biggest plus here is perhaps the most important- this player offers the sharpest, crispest and most detailed image I've yet seen from Blu-ray. On my projection screen this player's picture was always a subtle but noticeable hair sharper than that from the Sony PlayStation3. Slight bits of film grain and other very low-level details were always just that extra bit more apparent and the image was always just a bit more three-dimensional. Looking at the PS3 by itself doesn't leave anything to be desired, but in comparison the difference was surprisingly apparent."

when I move out of my parents house, and take my ps3 I will my parents a bd player( 2.0 compliant) because they are so cavemen like when it comes to anything that doesn't look like a standard dvd player.... and I'm only 23, not a 40 yr old who's "going to move out".... lol

Given the nVIDIA GPU and IBM cell chip inside of the PS3, why is it not performing beyond any standalone BD player? Those components should be able to crush anything else in the player category.

Why is this not so?

some people write better sw, esp if the other player uses hw components with better development tools

The PS3 playing Blu is like going after a fly with a bazooka. It can do the job, but it's not optimized for it. I mean, the cell processor can do so much more that just process blu. The thing is, what else is there to process? It's already spitting out everything there is to be spat out from the blu disc (video-wise). It still has a ways to go audio-wise, but that will come later. Which brings me to my point: because of the PS3's innards, it has the potential to always match the best stand-alones out there, even the ones that are not released yet.

I asked this because of the top thread that said that Panasonic is viewd to be better. I thought to myself, "How could anything be better?" Eyes are differernt but tech specs are another thing all together and PS3 is king. I'll have to see a side by side comparison somehow.

And the 95FD is even better than the 94HD they reviewed here.

Don't think so. Now that the war is over be ready for a flood of players both low and high end. In the world of high-end AV there are some manufacturers that will be making players that will make your head spin PQ & SQ wise. We are just at the tip of the iceberg right now with Blu technology. Lexicon and Meridian have made SD-DVD players in the $5000 range and when they get their versions of Blu players on the market they will stand what has been available on their ears.
When the esoteric manufacturers get going on Blu watch out...
