Default TrueHD or Uncompressed?

If a movie has the option for both, which sounds better, TrueHD or Uncompressed?

technically speaking, no. When TrueHD is decoded it is converted back into PCM (Uncompressed).

But how your Receiver handles Linear PCM vs. Bitstream signals is a whole 'nother topic.

To basically answer your Question...try out both, and go with the one that sounds best to you.

And call it a day.

Theres no real clear winner, only debate. So to avoid the debate, just go with what you think sounds the best and you'll be happy.

Default Audio Codecs 101

Geeeezzzz . . . . . How many times do we have to go over this ????

Dolby HD, Dolby Tru HD, DTS HD, and DTS HD Master Audio all all Lossless Audio Codecs - with compression. Where Linear PCM is Uncompressed Audio. All of these are in the Digital domain. All Audio is converted from digital to analog before it gets amplified. Only analog signals are reproduced by your speakers. Because the compression is less and the bandwith of the lossless audio is greater, it will produce a sound far better than what we've been listening too - ie: Dolby Digital and DTS.

The Movie Studios determine which Audio codec they'll use based upon disc capacity, and what suppliments they will be adding beyond the feature presentation. So, a 50gb. Blu-ray disc will allow for the better codecs or even the uncompressed audio, which is what's on the D2 master at the studio.

Does this information help ?

Dolby Digital Plus and Dts-HD High Resolution are 'Lossy' compressed codecs...not Lossless.

...but would anyone notice any difference? probably not.

Hmmm . . . very interesting! My understanding has been that standard Dolby Digial and standard DTS are 'lossy' and the Advanced Audio Codes are 'lossless', and finally Linear PCM is totally uncompressed Audio.

I would like to read 'absolute' evidence that I am incorrect, with links to the experts. If your so certain, please provide documentation supporting your position. Thanks !!!

Thanks Crackinhedz for the links. Cool !!! Though most consumers will not be able discern the differences, it is good to know, especially for someone, like myself, who recommends and sells this stuff. The audio side is most confusing even for us in the profession. Again, thanks !!! [Jim]
