Default Blu-ray/DVD Combo Discs

Right in the first few pages of my Sony S300 manual (you can pull it off the esupport website in PDF if you want to see it), there is specific mention of "types of discs this unit can play" to Blu-ray/DVD combo discs, ala the HD DVD/DVD combo discs. So that means there are provisions in the format for this. Now where are they?

I know in Wikipedia there is mention of a JVC combo prototype with a third DVD layer, but the Sony manual which is printed right from the horses mouth in Japan, would not be mentioning hypothetical possible prototypes, only hard facts. So once again, why is there mention of them in the manual and where are they?

Edit: I specifically hoping for single sided triple layer discs as mentioned in Wikipedia, NOT the ugly double sided discs. I have not seen any evidence that these would be double sided.

Did you not here of the issues HD-DVD had? Do you want a flippy? Do you want a higher price? etc.?

No, I did not hear of the issues. And no I don't want a flippy, doing it by third layer as mentioned in Wikipedia is seamless and beautiful. But it would be great to have discs that would work away from your home theather system, like cars, laptops (although I am sure in the future alot will have at least BD read only drives). I think a single sided three layer disc is a GREAT idea!

Plus it is a good strategy to spur adoption. If studios cancelled releasing DVDs in favor of combo discs (read Sony owned studios), people after aquiring a few of these, will decide they may as well buy a Blu-ray player to see what they are missing out on and get the most for there money of what they paid for for the disc.

Yes it would cost more, but if all movies were made on combo discs, I really do not see manufacturing being any more that DVDs just due to economies of scale.

Now, my point is not about wether they are a good idea or not, but the fact that vapourware is mentioned in my Sony manual.

How does all Blu-ray content on a single side make "a flippy"? Thanks in advance.

I would consider a disc with data on both sides a flippy. Your welcome.

But once again, what's so disqusting or "loser talk" about a single sided double or triple layer disc. It's SEAMLESS idea. There are NO cons, except price, but ONLY initially.

Seamless, except for disc playback problems. I don't want that....

Sigh. Once again, there has been NO double sided prototype, only single sided. I like my cover art too, and would not buy a double sided combo disc, only single sided.

Who needs this? Maybe some folks that switched over from HD DVD / DVD in hopes that the "DVD" part of a Blu-ray / DVD combo disc will lessen their pain?

Can we judge after such a product is released? Choices are good, if this is released and you do not like it, you can get the pure Blu-ray version. I and I am sure I am not the only one would apprecitate the backwards compatablity. Once again the premise of my post is that vapourware is mentioned in my manual. It means there may be something coming down the pike. I did not make this idea up for you all to flame me. I just mentioned it is in the manual, and am wondering if anyone has any further info on weather this is going to be reality, not if you would like it to be reality.

Okay, i am trying to understand what you are trying to say. Are you saying you think BD combo disc idea should be given a chance to see how well it would do?. Because if that is what you are saying, then there would be no point of the 50GB capacity. There is enough room to contribute to PQ/AQ, special features, BD live, etc... the list goes on. The only thing that i see happening if a BD combo disc exist is driving up the costs.

now I see the possibility of a BD combo disc. It could be pulled off, but again it would become too much of an expense. you saw what happened with HDDVD. Studios supporting that format were release combo disc. then later, they discontinued the combo format by rereleasing the same film at a later date, without the combo. Evil Dead 3 was one of those movies, and Miami Vice was another. It is just money being wasted.

now if that isn't what you are talking about, then explain to me what you are asking to know from this thread, and i would be more than happy to contribute.

If its available to the studios and they want to use, then let them use it as long as they have a version of the movie with out a combo disc.

One of the main points is that blu is trying to replace dvd, not co-exist so why would we want to continue giving people reason to keep a dvd player.
Not only that, with the multiple layers there is no guarantee that most dvd players would even be able to read it.
Blu with digital version is the way to go.
