Lightbulb Black Bars -My Opinion

My first post on the forum - I'd like to offer my opinion (simple new idea?) on the black bar aspect ratio issue, which I know has been widely discussed previously. Most persons on this forum seem to favor the original aspect ratio for Blu-Ray DVDs. Myself, I hate the black bars - to me, it seems to be huge waste of available 16:9 wide screen TV. I think if you take a national poll, you would find the general public pretty much split 50/50 on this issue (an actual poll was taken) - the results were split - about half want to retain the artistic intent of the dirertor, and the other half could care less about the director and simply want to fill the entire screen of their new HD TV with a nice HD picture. My recommendation: future Blu-Ray DVDs should offer a choice for the consumer - offer the original aspect ratio version, and also offer a full screen version (say 1:85) -let the customer choose - I think that would solve the issue. What's wrong with that simple recommendation?

What's wrong? Additional cost, waste of space . . .

People just need to learn to live with it. Not that big of a deal . . .

I don't think they should have two releases (Fullscreen vs. widescreen). They were a pain in the ass with DVD. I think all blu-ray should take up the whole screen, but wouldn't that still be widescreen since we have widescreen TVs?

Go ahead. Use the zoom feature on your TV to zoom into the image... Make it to fit EXACTLY your screen to get rid of the black bars.
Tell me how it looked. If you honestly like decreasing picture quality just so that it will fit your screen, go ahead... Me? Im sticking with the original aspect ratio that the film was recorded on.

Then stick to 1.78:1 and 1.85:1 movies.

Maybe you should do some research to make sure you'll be satisfied with your purchase?

It's not about "widescreen", it's about preserving a film's OAR.

It is the half that do not want that black bars because as you say "could care less about the director" that are uninformed as to what they would be loosing. If they know so much about what movies should look like, then why aren't they out there making movies? I want to see what the director wants me to see. I want to see the wide screen filled with nothing in Lawrence of Arabia so that I feel as if Lawrence really is in the middle of the largest desert on the planet with no other life anywhere near him. We should work on educating the 50% who don't care, not simply pandering to the lowest common denominator. Here is an excellent example of why we should present things in there original aspect ratio, and uses one of my favorite movies, Lawrence of Arabia, as a prime example: http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/764

Oh god, first it was "black bars are cutting off the top and bottom" on 4x3 TVs. Finally widescreen gets wide acceptance and now people are complaining about much smaller black bars on their TVs. Ugh! America is, I think, the only country that is dopey enough to have people STILL whining about black bars. Get over it. OAR or nothing, period. Can't there be a new forum rule about "no black bars posts" in the future?

I did plenty of research. I just don't understand how anyone could actually like that? and it's not like you have a super wide screen That lets you view the movie like the "director wants you to see it" chuckle's.

That's . . . the whole point of the black bars

Obviously "plenty" is not enough.

Turn off your lights, they'll go away

I'm sure that when Blu reaches a certain level, that there will be plenty of dual releases that bastardize the picture. Until that time, deal with it.
