Default Video Processing-Sony 53000ES vs. Yamaha V3800

Hey Guys...I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on upgrading my old DD receiver. Down to Sony 5300ES and Yamaha V3800...Listened to both and did notice a little audio quality difference, so I have my leader with that. However, because I will mostly be using this receiver with HD Sat TV (on a 1080i LCD), I wanted to see if you had any thoughts on a comparison of the video processing capabilities of each system.

I had heard that Yamaha was better for audio quality, but was concerned with their video capability. I've had success in the past with Sony.

Appreciate the thoughts...

Very few people in this forum seem to like Sony, but it has never disappointed me. I have the 4300ES and am very happy with the video.

The only Sony audio I would ever think about buying is their ES line. I'm think about the 5300es or the denon 3808. The 6 HDMIs is really kick butt for the price. Cnet is a good place for product reviews. They don't have one up yet for the Yamaha, but the do for the Sony. Their only real knock is the remote. here is the review

from the review
Video performance
We knocked the 5200 pretty hard for its video-processing issues, and we're happy to report that Sony has addressed them with the 5300ES. We used Silicon Optix's HQV test suite on DVD for the first part of our test, and the 5300ES handled itself very well. The initial resolution test looked sharp, proving that the 5300ES properly scales and delivers the full resolution of DVDs. The next two tests were handled adeptly as well, with almost no jaggies on a spinning white line or three shifting line. It even passed the difficult 2:3 pull-down test, as there was no moire in the grandstands as the car drove by.

We switched over to actual program material, and the 5300ES continued to impress. It had no trouble with the introduction to Star Trek: Insurrection, demonstrating that it does have 2:3 pull-down processing as it smoothly rendered the hulls of the boats and the curved edges of the railings on the bridge. It even did a solid job with the difficult intro on Seabiscuit. To Sony's credit, the company addressed our major video quality concerns on the 5200ES, making the 5300ES completely recommendable from a video quality perspective.

Not to derail, but have you look into the Integra DTR 8.8 or Onkyo 905? They are sister models (Integra is Onkyo's higher end) and the audio performance is amazing, then add on fully Audyssey MultEQ XT just makes it even better. The video processor is the HQV Reon-VX and it really is outstanding also. Better than the Anchor Bay in the Yamaha and the Faroudja in the ES. I really think the Onkyo and Integra receivers are the total package.

But between the Yamaha and ES, both are nice but I would have to favor the Anchor Bay chip in the Yamaha probably, and the audio of the Yamaha better also.

Thanks for the replies. Specifically I was interested in folks' thoughts on the Yamaha video quality (knowing that most Yamaha owners are very loyal to the audio capabilities of their systems). I have used Sony before and have been pleased with their performance. The Yamaha sounded slightly better with a CD playing to me, but I have no experience with Yamaha's video quality.

I'll be going back to the local high-end store tonight to look some more to try and make a decision, but I'm still on the fence.

Bassbone, I appreciate the derailment, but the Integra 8.8/Onkyo 905 are getting a little beyond my price range (actually I'm stretching it at the 5300ES/V3800 level, but don't tell my wife )
