I believe the original poster is refering to the DVDs, not the BDs in the set. They could have added the DVD content together and put it on one BD instead of several standard DVDs. That I agree with.

Add to that the issue none of the content on the 2 DVDs has high definition quality video. The 3 BDs in the set all have 1080p versions of the movie.
Overall, I see absolutely no problem whatsoever in Bladerunner having 5 discs. The package doesn't consumer a lot of shelf space. It's not even as thick as 2 BD cases put together. Bladerunner 5-disc Complete Collector's Edition is one of the best bargains on the Blu-ray market. And it sets a standard that other studios should follow. As you might be able to tell, I stand absolutely opposed to the silly point of view that movies and their extras should always be crammed onto just one single disc. I don't know why some people have to have things that way. But in this matter is runs opposed against the interest of quality. |

It does say on the back that the 2 discs are standard dvds. It was cost effective for WB since they made a HD-dvd version as well as SD-dvd. They probably could've done what you requested but do you really want to pay extra for a blu-ray disc for non high def content?

It makes way more business sense to do it the way they did. That way they are able to easily reproduce the supplemental discs for every release at the same time. It also helps keep the price so nice and low. It's not like it's a big inconvenience to have it on 5 discs instead of 4. Plus, now I'm able to watch the supplements on any of my DVD players as well - BONUS!

That's not true. All of the extras were produced in high definition. Warner claimed they wouldn't have time to do HD encodes of the extras and still make the release date, so they demoted the extras to SD and standard DVD.

People will seriously whine about anything...
The movie is an AMAZING transfer, and people ***** because instead of wasting who knows how much money and jacking the price of the set up ten dollars or more, they saved by using the same extras disks in each version? Not only that but there were scores of reviews and previews that made this very well known long before the release. |

Disc 2, Dangerous Days: Making Bladerunner is all anamorphic enhanced 480p SD DVD material, not an HD format like 720p or 1080p. Disc 4, Enhancement Archive is pretty much the same thing: anamorphic enhanced 480p SD DVD material. Some 4:3 SD stuff is also mixed in on this disc. None of it is HD. Further, the DVD format cannot adequately support HD quality playback dependably without some really serious compromises made to the video quality. DVD has a maximum bandwidth of 10 million bits per second. That's for both audio and video together. Even highly compressed 720p material is going to need to peak past 10 Mb/s from time to time to keep from looking just plain horrible. |

As regards the extras, I did not see the deleted scene where Roy Batty and Leon enter the Eye Works and murder the receptionist. I have this on a DVD. I might have missed it though. If anyone has spotted this on the extras disc... let me know. |
