Default Denon AVR-2808CI or Yamaha RX-V1800

I have narrowed it down to these two receivers. I had purchased an Onkyo TX-SR805 last week and already returned it due to the lip sync issues, which were very disracting and only happened on certain channels and movies. Anyway, that's whole other story.

I know the pro's and con's of each receiver. I'm not worried so much about price because the difference is about $77 (more for the Denon). I'm kind of turned off by the Denon only having 2 HDMI inputs, but on the plus side it does scale to 1080p. I only have 2 components (PS3/DVR) that will be using the HDMI ports. And, I've heard the problem about the Yamaha's video pass through.

I guess I'm looking for some feed back on owners of each. Anything I should know before making this decission?

Have you looked at Pioneer? I was looking at the 2808CI as well, then I found the Pioneer VSX 92TXH which has 1 more HDMI input and 1080p pass through and scaling. Costs less then the Denon as well.

Default I like The Yamaha

I'm on my second top of the line Yamaha and I love 'em. The suckers just won't die. They work perfectly and sound superb. The only reason I bought a new one was the old one was pre HDMI and I needed it for the new players. I've owned Pioneer, Sony, Onkyo and Yamaha. I like Yamaha the best. You won't be disappointed. It will literally do ANYTHING you ask of it. Any questions? Just ask.

I have looked at the Pioneer. I was considering this model as well as a Sony ES4300. They both were a little more money (no promotions) and I didn't think they sounded as good as the Denon or the Yamaha.

I did however like the way it looked.

Not much help, but I just ordered the Denon 3808CI on saturday. I looked at the Yammy V3800 but went with the Denon instead. In the end, it's up to you. Try to pick one up somewhere that has a liberal return policy if you are dissatisfied. Good luck!!!

How did you end up with the Denon?

Don't the Yamaha's have a clipping issue with the video levels, or did that get fixed?

I've read about the clipping issue and as far as I know, there is no fix.

Anyone have the Denon?

The clipping issue was a big factor. To date I believe there is no known fix for this issue. Denon to date has been doing fairly well providing updates to their receivers in a timely manner.

I just ordered the Denon from 6ave.com It was $799.99 shipped. I went to Best Buy last night and listened to the both receivers for well over an hour. The sales guy was a little pissed when I left with no purchase They had both of them in stock for $1199. I told him how much I was paying and he said "well if you buy it here and something happens you could return it with the hassle of shipping it back".....yeah, that's worth the extra $400. I'll take my chances. Plus, I'm in PA and 6ave is about an hour away from me.

Anyway, if you are interested in either one of these receivers, call Roberto X-8609 @ 6ave.com and tell him you saw this post.

Okay, this is the first time I'm hearing of a clipping issue. What's the deal here?

Yamaha's always had that brighter sound to my ear, some like it, some don't, the Denon isn't as bright, but delivers some of the best sound I've ever heard, the real difference between the 2, not sure if you care, I know your into the movies, but if you like music, the Denon buries the Yamaha when listening to music, also your sub sounds way better with a Denon then a yamaha, I have had many Denons and Yamahas, and I prefer the Denon

I have a 2808, however I'm using it as a pre/pro which feeds a Rotel amp (well, it will when that arrives in a few days).

I wanted all the modern audio codecs, and since I'd be using my own means of amplification, I didn't go for the 3808. The fewer hdmi in didn't matter to me as only one device I have (namely my BD player) sends audio there, all the rest can use optical, and my tv has more than enough hdmi to make up for it.

I returned my 2808ci for the Yamny V1800 I had BOTH and ended up with the Yamaha.
it has more power per channel and 2 more HDMI inputs.

I can definitely notice a difference in sound quality with my speakers after hooking them up to the Yamy as apposed to the Denon

always have and always will be a denon fan.

i have the 3808 which an amazing piece of equipment. my brother has always had a yamaha and seems to love it, but yamaha's have always given me an odd sense of "cheapness" to it.

i hear ya on the lack of hdmi inputs on the 2808. but if it is that big of a deal, and you're leaning away from the yamaha for whatever reason, you can always pick up an hdmi switcher for relatively cheap on monoprice.com

either way, my vote goes denon. denon always puts out phenomenal sound whether it be music or movies.

Did you notice any loss in audio as some have reported? Any "clipping" issues you've noticed?

My 3808ci is great.. denon seem to output a FW update each 3 months or so keeping stuff hot! The Net radio and support for FLAC (loseless) audio sold it to me. + the interface is neat...

I have over 500GB of Dave Matthews Band shows in .flac16 and .flac24 formats. I will definitely be keen on getting a receiver that supports the streaming of these.

I know the 905 has network connectivity for streaming audio through WMP, which has a .flac plug-in, but is that all that's necessary?

As a HT installer I've installed both and the Pioneer as well...

From a setup feature Denon is the easiest to setup and configure, including the remote. The Yamaha did pretty well and didn't see any picture loss. The Pioneer is a GREAT receiver, except that it isn't very user friendly and the remote setup is ridiculous.

I would go with the Denon personally. I own a 1707 and a 2308CI they both are fantastic receivers.
