I know MTV & VH-1 in the States are not doing broadcasting in HD but are the music videos (or promo videos as the Brits call them) shot (on film or digital), edited and broadcast in HD? Anybody in the post industry know?
Even if they final cuts were in HD I'd be happy because that would mean future video releases on BD would be in HD. Belatedly I just saw Janet Jackson's So Excited. WOW! ![]() fuad |

Well many music concerts are being shot in HDTV.
Most music videos are shot on film, and in olden days they would only be edited on film and telecined, but I would guess many today are done in digital editing suites.. I've seen Harlem Shuffle (The Rolling Stones) and Take On Me (Aha) an others even projected in 35mm (some looked more like 16mm to me tho). If it was done and edited on film, a HD version should be easy to do and would look excellent if it was shot on 35mm. Those shot on film and edited on NTSC or PAL video, are in 480 and 576 so unless they went back to the negatives, rescanned and and reedited, they would be upconversions. (Just like Star Trek: The Next Generation and first 2 seasons of Buffy etc, will be if they don't go to the negatives and redo the editing and SFX!). Things shot on NTSC or PAL videotape will always be 480i and 576i quality, upconverted. Things shot on "HDTV" videotape, or any new music video shot on film and digitally edited in 1080 of course will look great. I think I posted here somewhere how to determine what frame rate a music video was shot. The tricky part is to distiguish which ones shot on film are edited on video. (I hope you can tell which have been shot on live videotape (by that "live' look) from those shot in film!) Last edited by Deciazulado; 12-18-2006 at 01:28 AM. Oh I know about that.
![]() What I don't know if there are music videos edited with special FX on HD? So that future releases can be in HD. Some current music videos are just shot in SD. Most of the expensive ones are either shot in 35mm or HD tape. fuad |
