If you are willing to go up to $700 I would piece it together. You can get the same Onkyo speakers and the Onkyo 605 for under $700. At least witht he 605 you can get all the HD audio DolbyTrueHD and DTS HD MA. Just my opinion.

Onkyo Speakers $229

Onkyo 605 $389

Reading the specs I noticed it says "hdmi passthrough only another connection is required for audio". For what I know it means it is not good with ps3. You can't get the HD audio options through any other connection than HDMI.

Isn't that right?

you can only get it through hdmi and multi analog cables but the ps3 decodes already so pass through should be fine

Someone (crackinhedz ) can correct me if I'm wrong, but I want to try and help so here goes...

I don't think the receiver will do what you want it to (in the box). If I understand correctly, if it's HDMI-passthrough it will not process audio via HDMI. You'd need to run a connection from your TV back to the receiver, and for that it'd have to be optical (since it won't do HDMI audio) -- in which case, you can't do the HD codecs (you are forced into lossy DD or DTS tracks, or 2 channel PCM).

Am I right on this? Someone help me as well -- confirm for me that for once I maybe know what I'm talking about.

I like that receiver and speaker option you were given -- not very familiar with Onkyo speakers though...

You are correct. I have a Sony receiver with "HDMI passthrough" and analog 5.1 inputs, but have to connect my PS3 via optical cable and am therefore limited to Dolby Digital, DTS and PCM stereo (no Dolby True HD, DTS Master Audio or uncompressed 5.1)

I am trying to decide whether to buy a stand-alone BR player with anolog outputs (I would wait until profile 2 is available) or a new receiver (or a new house and redo my whole home theatre).

Well, again, it might depend on what exactly you want to do...entire wad on a receiver? Or split between a receiver and new speakers? If you're looking for an upgrade on audio experience, you might want to look at speakers too...

pass-through means that the receiver will not read the audio information that is included in the hdmi signal. Without another connection such a receiver will get no audio. So, pass-through is not fine.

Get the Onkyo 605 (around $300 - $400) or the Yamaha V663 (around $500) and this speaker set or something similar.

If you're using the PS3, then it doesn't matter. The PS3 can't bitstream either over hdmi because it is version 1.2.

Sony should be doing a firmware update in the near future to address the audio issue with the PS3.
