Blu-Ray is great and everything, but there are a lot of univers titles I'd like to own and HDi seems cool. My point is, the HD DVD Add-On for Xbox 360 is $50 box and everyone is trying to get rid of their stock. So should I get the drive and scoop up some bargains?

Not to mention the lack of support for in case the HD DVD titles say.. break. Or the player.
I'm sure you can fix it yourself since they won't touch them anymore. Seriously.. leave this site if your first post is about HD DVD. HDi is not cool. It is limited. BD-j is better. Don't believe the old hype about it. Sure it was harder to get started with BD-j only because it involved actual programming, but it is far more powerful than HDi. Just leave HD DVD alone. The prices are cause they need to clear out their inventory. You will not see any support for these or anything. |

After reading a post later in the thread, figured I needed a sarcasm warning on this post (in case it wasn't obvious).
I agree. So yeah, buy as many HD DVD players and HD DVDs as you can afford. Then, join the lawsuit against Toshiba for abandoning all the "people" that bought HD DVD products and you'll even get back some of the money you spent. I think the way it works is that the more you spend on HD DVD, the more you'll get back in the lawsuit. So, spend enough on HD DVD and you'll even make a profit from the lawsuit. But, you have to spend a considerable amount before you'll profit from the lawsuit so see if you can get family and friends to join in with you. This will also be appreciated by blu-ray supporters since you'll be helping to clear shelf-space so that blu-ray can expand. So, it's a win-win situation really. Instant gratification can sometimes mean eventual dissatisfaction. I know. I bought RCA's CED Selectavision and several CED disks when that format was on its way out. It was also cheap. In more ways than one. But I eventually set it by a dumpster and regretted having wasted the money.

At Best Buy the other day I had a fleeting thought of picking up the 360 add on for 50 bucks . . . then it was gone

I actually think getting an HD DVD player and getting the cheap movies is a good idea.
You can get entry level players for less than $80 and movies for $10 to $15 a pop. Get instant access to movies like Matrix, Batman Begins, Transformers, Eastern Promises, the Bourne Trilogy, Beowolf .... I could go on and on. When those movies come out I highly doubt that they will be anything but the same video encodes. And the audio encodes on all those are outstanding (remember you don't have to be lossless -- which many of them are -- to be great -- witness Transformers audio). I would recommend a second gen player A2, A20 or XA2 if you can get one. The XA2 is an amazing machine for DVD upconversion. Anyway -- do what you want, but I think the deals out there justify the investment in HD DVD. If you are worried about support down the road -- just get a Mack warranty. I got a 4 year Mack repair warranty for $45 for my XA2. |

owning HD DVD does not mean that you hate Blu Ray -- it just means that you love movies. And the movie experience is what it is supposed to be all about. I own a PS3 -- doesn't mean I hate my Xbox 360 or Wii (or Dreamcast or PS2).

Actually, I just picked up a "returned, but Best Buy certified" HD A30 for $64.99 + tax + $10 2 year Best Buy warranty, for a total of $80 ish. Before some of you lash out and cry out blasphemy...here's my thinking.
I already have a 60gb ps3 for my living room which plays my 25 something blu-rays. However, for my room I have a 32 inch Sharp Aquos LCD (720p) that I have for watching movies and TV in bed. I wanted a DVD player for my bedroom. I could have bought anothe PS3 to play blu-rays, but I figured: prices aren't coming down for another 8-10 months and I don't and will not have a substantial sound system for my bedroom (there's no point). So why should I get another blu-ray player if I can't appreciate the sound in my bedroom (that's what I have my living room/HT for). So I didn't want to spend over $100 on an upconverting player. So I bought the Sony DVP upconverting DVD player at Costco for $79.99. Then I saw this at Best Buy and I figured that I get a better upscaler (A30 chip is supposed to be pretty good for upscaling) for the same price. I also got 300 and Bourne Identity in HD-DUD format in the box. With the two year warranty (for $10), I can return my player within two years and put that $70 towards a blu ray player. My A30 works just fine upscaling---and yes, it takes a reaaaly long time to boot. Moral of the story: If you have a similar situation, the you should go buy an A30. |

HD DVD is a waste of money. Why buy another, in this case, dead format? And, why reward Toshiba for anything considering the BS they created with the format war? Just be a little patient and the exclusives will eventually come to Blu-ray and may even have better encodes in some cases. As far as prices, Blu-ray deals will happen as they are today (see Amazon sale).
