Hey Gang!
So i just upgraded my PS3 with a 160gb Hard drive and was wondering about linux on the PS3. Is it worth installing? Just how functional is it? IS it easy to use? And what version would be the best to install on the PS3. If any of you have experiences installing the OS i would love to hear your stories! Rock On ~ Brett |

I used to have Fedora & Yellow Dog Linux on my PS3. They are quite difficult and easy to use. But now its too complicated when it come to new Linux OS because I had to follow the instruction step by step. As of right now, I don't have them anymore and I don't want to go back and start all over again.

I've heard that you can't use the entire power of the cell. And you can't even touch the video card. Plus there's that (only) 256 Mb of ram... So I don't know if it something worth doing. Although to be honest I haven't tried it.
From what I know you can install Yellow Dog and Ubuntu on it. |

I've run linux on my PS3, just make sure you have a good size swap file so you don't run out of RAM. I had mine set for 1 GB. The downsides to it though is if you are running memory intensive programs, it will slow down a bit as it constantly has to access the hard drive versus using RAM. YDL was a pretty good distro and didn't have too many problems with it. They also have ps3 ubuntu (ps3ubuntu.com)
If this is your first time running linux, I would highly recommend learning the basics of it, starting with Xwindows, which you can set up to mimic the standard actions of MS Windows (right click, left click, etc) or you can set them up uniquely. I would even more highly recommend getting used to the command line prompt as that is where I think linux excels. Now the huge downside to linux, it is very nit picky, and most of your set up you have to do via text files that you will have to hand edit. Not much of the set up long term is done automatically. On an original (computer) install, I had to edit around 30-40 files manually to get it where I wanted it. That was setting everything from user environment, monitor display, internet connectivity, how my computer displayed to other computers. |
