Default Blu ray drives in the 40gig and 60gig same?

I was wondering if the blu ray drive was the same in both models? i was planning on doing a transplant to move the blu ray drive from a 40gig to my 60gig, would this work?

Nope, but i don't see why it would be diferent, if its a self contained box then just give it a try.

I think they are the same, but there might be some codes in the firmware that tie the drive to that paticular PS3. I know the 360 is like that, but not sure about the PS3.

Its not in the drive, in the 60 gb there are additional ps2 hardware on the motherboard that would not effect the blu drive.

Sorry to hear that, but since you did it, is there any labeling to indicate the drive models/versions etc?

Default Replacing blu ray drive in ps3

Hey guys I have a question. Has anybody here replaced their ps3 blu ray drive? I've looked in every forum and every search querry and I havent found much information on this. To make a long story short, my ps3 is giving me an error code 80010514 which means is the blu ray drive (either the lens or the drive itself) is bad. I lost the receipt so I cant send it to Sony. Anyways, I found the replacement part on ebay part #KES-400AAA. My question is, has anyone replaced their own blu ray drive, and if so how hard was it, and what are things I need to look out for. Thanks for the help guys.

I'm sorry to hear that. With the replaced drive are you getting the identical symptoms you had before the swap? If so, the Blu-ray drive probably isn't causing the problem. In that case, I would swap them back and ship the 60 gig unit to Sony for authorized repair.

For future reference, I would be a little hesitant in swapping out the drive units unless you can visually confirm them as identical by model numbers or a code. Sony aggressively revised models throughout the lives of the PS1 and PS2, and they're off to a good start so far with PS3 changes. Just make sure you're swapping apples for apples. Well, Blu-ray for Blu-ray anyway.

huh that is weird that doesn't even make sense unless the blu-ray is encoded to the mother board and they put in kill switches into the blu drives.

No but there was a slight difference under the drive, the 60 had 3 exposed wires while the 40 didnt

It was extremely simple to do, just removing some screws and poping the top off, was the hardest part, the drive and ribbon/wire is really easy to remove

no, the drive in the 60gig wasent spinning disc at all, it was dead, but the 40 did spin the disc but the ps3 i guess didn't recognize it

yeah i would have gotten a 60gig if they were available
