Onkyo 605 Silver vs. Black - Blu-ray Forum

With the exception of the color is there any difference between the Black and silver versions of the amp? Amazon sells the silver one for $50 less than the black. Just want to know if there is a logical reason why?

In some circles it is known as The Black Tax. There is no difference except the color, it is just that since black is a more popular/classic option there is sometimes a premium that is to be paid. I also find black electronics to be less distracting as silver stands out more. Anyway, there is a long answer for your simple question.

That extra 50 bucks will buy you 2-3 BDs if you play your cards right, and don't care about color.

I just got my silver 605 yesterday. It sounds awesome. The silver matches my Samsung DLP almost perfectly. Couldn't see any reason to spend the extra $50 for the color. Apple started charging an extra $100 bucks for black Macbooks which I also thought was insane.

since i dont got my black 705 yet i cannot confirm this but i saw on pics that the display is green on the black and orange on the silver if am wrong correct me cause am not sure of it

and here in belgium the price of the black and silver is the same that i do now for sure

I wouldn't characterize the black as being premium, but rather the silver as being discounted. There is just less demand for the silver.

If you want a sweetheart of deal on the 605, try http://www.accessories4less.com. $350 shipped with a free HDMI cable. It's a refurb, but with the same warranty.

I bought my 705 from them. It was quick and easy. Looks and works perfectly.

I think the 605 NEW on Amazon is $342 (silver) no HDMI, but we all know Monoprice has them for $5 !

Or you can pay $350 shipped from Amazon and buy an HDMI cable for $10 on monoprice.com and have a non-refurbished 605 with cable for only $10 more.

About $390 is the best price I have seen on Amazon for the black version new. Although there are several refurb offers on Amazon similar to the one I mentioned. So, while a good buy, not a unique deal by any means.

same guts, just diff. color... i opted for the black 605 to match my decor...if silver would of matched..i would of saved the extra $$ paid 399 on amazon.. then it dropped to 380 the following week... gotta love amazon price match

I went for the silver at the time it was $50 less at Amazon. Got it delivered for $339
