Default What would you recommend?

Right out of College the job hunt was going slowly so I took a job at a Hollywood Video. People always asked me what I would recommend. These were normal people not a movie geek like me so I had one movie picked out that I would always recommend that I thought appealed to almost all audiences:

TWILIGHT (Starring Paul Newman)

Check it out if you have not seen it. Anyway I was wondering if you had to recommend one movie to someone that was not a movie geek what would it be? Remember these people have probably seen most big time releases so stay away from those.

Second Hand Lions - a good family movie, one of my surprise rentals. Duvall is king.

LOL I can imagine most people settling in for a nice relaxing night and getting hit with Irreversible. "Have you seen this movie you recommended?! And if you have, WTF is wrong with you!?"

Not sure.... I'd probably recommend the newest movie out, that looks terrible.

Funny Story here::::: SORRY TO HI-JACK.

when I was 16, one of my jobs was at a local video store. During my first week of employment this happened!!!! The VHS case (hmm now that I think about it there were no DVDs duh!) for a Burt Reynold's movie (not sure the name) showed him walking with a shot-gun, and the entire back-ground was a huge fire-ball from an explosion. I picked it up, and told my manager (who is awesome by the way) that I couldn't believe that movie sits on the shelf, unrented (wasn't even a new release) because it has this cheesy looking cover, but the movie was AWESOME...... Without hesitation, my manager made a little note, and taped it (all four sides, I remember like it was yesterday) that said

"Despite the cheesy cover, I assure you this movie is actually very good" or something of that nature.... I know "cheesy" was on it!!!!

Either way, several months later, I was hanging out at my manager's house, her husband was grilling out, we were all just having a good time (I used to go to concerts with her husband, another great guy..... I keep in touch with them to this day) either way, she mentioned that movie, and I said

"Actually.... I never really saw that movie, I was just messing with you"

Then we got a good laugh out of it, because the thing was NEVER on the shelf, because people saw someone took the time to make a note about it, and thought it was worth renting......

Fast-Forward 5 years later, and I caught the movie on the "FOX SUNDAY ACTION MOVIE" and I can assure you this.....

THAT MOVIE SUCKS!!!!!!

EDIT!!!!!

I looked up Burt Reynolds movies, and couldn't find the cover, and no names rang a bell.... I could be wrong about it being Burt Reynolds in the movie.... it's been 15 years or so.... so I'm entitled to forget

Nope.... wasn't that one..... The guy (who I thought was Burt Reynolds) was walking out of what I believe was a Barn that blew up..... The details are hazy though... that's for sure. It was a full shot, of the guy walking.....

I believe the movie you are thinking of is Malone. I have seen it a few times. It's not horribly bad, but Reynolds has done much, much better:

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0093483/

In that one, he faced off against some nut jobs out to take over the country. The barn in question was theirs.

If you're looking for some movies that slipped under the radar and are good enough to recommend, here are some that I could recommend:

Comedy - Hollywood Shuffle or Free Enterprise
Horror - Dead Silence or Ginger Snaps
Foreign - Run Lola Run
Drama - Rare Birds, Malcolm or The Lookout
Kids Movie - Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller
Animated - Iron Giant
Family Movie- Phar-Lap

Mind you, opinions vary, but I have recommended many of these on this list and haven't gotten any complaints about them. Phar Lap is currently not available, but like any movie, it'll get released again.

Yeah I actually can imagine the fallout if he recommended that. Best not do it.

"Bright Lights, Big City"

Michael J. Fox is amazing in the movie, and it's definitely one of my personal favorites!
