Default Recommend a Surround Sound system?

Guys, long time reader, first time poster...

I am returning my Sony STR-DG710 today to Best Buy as I am not very happy with it.

Can anybody recommend a good receiver for under $400?

Thx!

onkyo 705, more future proof than the 605. you can see side by side specs on onkyos site

http://www.us.onkyo.com/prod_class.cfm?class=Receiver

edit: use amazon.com for prices and compare prices of the black vs silver. silver is sometimes cheaper

At that pricepoint, the Onkyo TX-SR605 would be perfect for you.

I agree with un4gvn. Save your money for just a little while and get the 705. You'll be very happy you did in the long run.

The 605 will give you the HDMI input/output you'll want, and the silver IS cheaper on amazon.... so it falls in your price range. I don't know much about Onkyo, but it is tough to beat the features on it for that price.

Get the Onkyo 605 over the 705. I have it, and it's an AMAZING receiver for the price. There's no reason to pay $200 more for THX certification and 10 more watts per channel for the 705. If you're going to pay more for a receiver, then get the 805 which has beeter upconversion and a lot more power and options (but it's $750 )

lets put it this way,

i always consider most of my equipment as an investment. if you plan to purchase something, you might want to future proof it and make sure that its going to last for the next two to three years, if it wont, then reconsider and save up for the next level.

personally, the receiver IS the heart of a good HT system. my priority when spending is to invest first in a good front soundstage set speakers, receiver or pre/pro, then acoustic treatments.

When it comes to technology, there is no such thing as "future proof".

With the 705, you also get:
an additional HDMI input
better automated calibration
preamp outputs
phono input
7-band EQ
back lighted remote

and a few other odds and ends.

Whether it is worth it is up to you.

Also the 605/705/805 all have the same upconversion chip and output 720p. You have to go to the 875/905 to get 1080p upconversion.

You can also try a STR-DG910...

passes 1080/24p

And accepts Linear PCM.. from the PS3...

Calibration for speakers could be more desired but it is adequate..

Im too lazy to type at the moment.

Ill just simply tell you that the onkyo 605 is the best receiver you can get for under 400 dollars.
You'll be happy with the beast.
It also is capable of DTS-HD, making it last ALOT longer than most receivers under 400 dollars.

I find it comparable to the more expensive receivers as well.

Go here http://www.shoponkyo.com/products.cf...ubcat=Receiver NOW. When you sign up on their site, you get $10 off the first purchase, and their refurbs will give you an additional 10%. I wish I knew this deal was coming. I got a refurb 805 from them the other week, but I can't complain, I only paid $639. If you can afford it, the 805 is an awesome receiver.

you can find it cheaper than that and besides. theres A LOT more than the two things you listed. if anyone is considering a 605 or a 705 then i suggest do a side by side comparison on onkyo.com and go down the list.

There are also a lot more features to tweak the audio to your liking on the 805 that the onkyo website doesn't even list.
