Default PS3 and Audio---I'm an idiot

So, I have had my ps3 and about 15 blu's now for close to 2 months. I finally leanred a week ago I can press display on the remote and see over the movie the sound, time left, etc. Well, tonight I am watching I am Legend for the first time (fantastic, but strange movie) and I press audio for shits and giggles. Well, I see the english 1, 2 french, spanish, etc. Something made me go back to english 2 as I was on 1. Certainly sounds 10000% better and I laugh because I see the logo go from dolby digital to True Hd. Obviously, the sound was freaking night and day in a good way. Mind blowing for that matter. So, all this time I was not listening to the best audio on all my blu's? LOL

So, how come the ps3 doesnt automatically set the audio playback to the best soundtrack? Is that something I have to do everytime, which isnt a big deal?

any inout would be great.

The majority of people out there do not have receivers that can handle the high def codecs. The player defaults to the Dolby Digital or DTS track so that you hear sound no matter what... A good point was made today in kjack's thread that it cuts back on customer support calls if everyone gets video and sound when the disc plays... saves some serious cash

oh yea, you can also choose the audio track before you start the movie. It's usually under the "subtitles" menu.

Slec...so what does ur post mean? My receiver doesnt play the real "true HD" sound that it displays on my screen, hence the reason it defaults to dolby digital? I just looked at my receiver and it says Onkyo SR-705 and everything is hooked up with hdmi cables.

nonono, yours is fine, you're hearing the full TrueHD track... But receivers have only been out a short time that can handle HDMI and hence the high def codecs. You are squared away, but most receivers out there (especially ones bought by less informed consumers than yourself) will not handle HDMI, or the new codecs... therefore it defaults to a codec that ALL receivers can play

i'm not saying it won't change down the road, but that's the way it is currently..

I think he means, yes, you have to manually select the HD audio track on the disc itself first...by default it will play the standard dolby digital or dts. This guarantees just about everyone will hear audio right out of the box and makes for less pissed off customers.

What I say in several verbose sentences you say in several concise sentences. As always,

For this specific reason you should always login to Blu-ray and you will learn a lot of stuff about Blu-ray discs and its fuctionality over period. You should and prepare yourself to keep updated as your PS3.Just wait for the firmware update which belongs to DTSHDMA what are you going to say about this.

Sweet, well enjoy it!

Looking at this differently, it gives studios a good reason to put DTSHD-MA on their discs... It's an embedded codec with High Def extensions so if selected, you will atleast get the "core" 1.5 Mbps track. The PS3 not *yet* decoding DTSHD-MA aside, its a smart way to run it from a studio perspective. no extra 640 track. Never thought about it that way before... i know a couple DTSHD-MA movies default to that track... I wonder if all do...

Anyone know if High Res is embedded in the HD-MA track as well?

Because the PS3 is internally decoding the TrueHD, it sends this to the receiver as PCM. It shows up as Multichannel on your receiver.. All is well!

But that's stupid. The PS3 *knows* what my receiver can play - it's connected via HDMI and asked the receiver! Therefore, if it knows the receiver can handle 7.1/5.1 PCM, why not decode the higher quality audio and stream it as PCM, just as it's doing for the DD/DTS?

It would be nice to see this kind of stuff fixed in firmware updates.
