Default 40gb vs 60gb ps3...few questions.

Hi all,
Few questions for you all if you don't mind. I just recently decided I'm probally going to be buying a PS3 very soon primarily for Blu Ray. Few questions first though. Is the only PS3 still being produced the 40gb? Are there any disadvantages aside from PS2 playback and the difference in hard drive size? I'm confused about all the models

On a side note, how is the PS3 as a Blu Ray player? Is it considered a good player or a very budget one? How does it compare to stand alone players it's price?

Thanks so much,
-Ori

40gb does not have backwards compatibility with PS2 games, and no super audio cd ability. No memory card slots and only 2 usb ports.

Other than that, its the exact same as the other models.

If you do not game, listen to super audio cd's and have no need for more than 2 usb inputs...the 40gb is good for you.

As a player, it has been regaurded as one of the best out. It is always undergoing upgrades to make it even better, so its hard to compare to standalones...in a sense, its better than a standalone.

Not to mention wifi internet surfing. No standalone can do that!

With its 512 gigs of RAM, it is quite impressive for what it can do. However, I wouldn't call it a 'super computer.'

There is a new bundled 80GB PS3 coming I think. It comes with MGS4 game and a DualShock 3 controller. The 40GB doesn't support Memory Cards and stuff like that but when it comes to Blu-ray they all have the same capabilities. If Blu-ray is your primary reason for wanting a PS3...no matter which model you get you're good.

i bought the 40 gig because i didnt have a ps2 so playing bc games was meaningless. kind of sucks not having a memory card slots because i have to transfer pictures from camera to computer to jump drive to get them on the ps3. dont have any need for more than 2 usb ports so hope that helps. and it is wifi too

...or you could use the media server sharing and just copy the camera pic directly from the PC to the PS3. No need for jumpdrive.

60 and 80 can do SACD

the 40 is the only one currently being sold (unless you can locate the discontinued 80gb, i heard newegg has some)

I heard somewhere that since the 40gig model is the latest, it doesn't overheat as much as the earlier models (60gig and 80gig)

the 40 gig is coo...I thought about it..But if you got the money at the time and want to spend...i would get 60 or 80...you get more stuff..usb ports...card drives for like your digital camera...

o did i mention 60 and 80s..it has the shiny chrome trim also hehehee

But i would suggest getting any of the ps3s...they play blu rays..normal dvds...ps3games...and you can put pictures on there and see them on your tv..

Default Depends...

You can get the 80GB if you want the card readers and extra USB ports. If not the Hard Drive can easily be upgraded, I just upgraded mine to 250GB with ease.

well heres what i know, the 60GB is way better then any other for this one reason, it has a better blu ray player in it, in the new versions ie 40/80 they downgraded the software because everyone was buying the ps3 for the bluray player instead of the game system.

This seems to contradict what others said and doesn't make much sense? Anyone else confirm?

Twoddle. Blu-ray Disc playback is identical on every PS3 model.

edit: differences between models are well covered here.

2.0 for BD is coming out in FW update. Theres no overheating issues unless your playing 3 bds straight or have it crammed in a cabinet. Aside from that it will warn u if its too hot before it shuts itself off. Ive never seen the warning....i read bout it. I have a 60G. PS3 is a great system.
