Default Hayao Miyazaki films

Does anyone know if Hayao Miyazaki's films will be released on Blu Ray? I would LOVE to get my hands on Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke on Blu.

There are 2 Studio Ghibli films on Blu-ray in Japan. I don't think either is translated into English, and I think either one of these or another one is only available at the Ghibli forest and can not be ordered online (not sure about that).
Eitherway, for a US release, they have not been announced yet.
I am sure that since Disney has the distribution rights to this we will see it eventually, but it may take several years before they get to it here. Either we all wait, or look to see if the Japanese editions add English subtitles.

I am with you here. I would like a lot of his films on blu... I have a Studio Gibli collection and there are great, but having them in blu would make me giddy.

I can't seem to find any on amazon.co.jp but they might not have been released yet.
I'll keep looking on other sites.

This has much more HD/Blu-ray anime release info...

Quote:
This is a reply I posted in a different thread about anime films released in HD, but please read the whole thing. There is lots of information scattered throughout:

From July 21 through September 10th, 2007, the Museum for Contemporary Art Tokyo held an exhibition honoring Oga Kazuo, the art director and background artist for many famed works from Japan's Studio Ghibli. Over 600 works from the artist were on display, and numerous fans flocked to the one-of-a-kind exhibition celebrating the lush, gorgeous background artwork typifying many a work from Miyazaki Hayao and other Ghibli filmmakers. International fans of Oga and Studio Ghibli have not been left out, however. The Oga Kazuo Exhibition: Ghibli No Eshokunin - The One Who Painted Totoro's Forest (Blu-ray + DVD) allows fans the opportunity to attend the exhibition, as well as watch interviews and testimonials with Oga's contemporaries and collaborators, all subtitled in English.

I have the disc, it's excellent

Disney will never lose the rights to Ghibli. The disc complained about, Grave of the Fireflies is owned by Central Park Media, not Disney for one thing. The movies have sold millions of copies here (Kiki did a million on VHS alone)

I would love to get these on blu as well. Since my kids speak Japanese they've been exposed to Miyazaki and love this stuff.

I can say the clips of the above movies that are in the documentary look fantastically amazing. Some like Totoro betray their age though, and no a huge remaster would not help.

I agree. The post I mentioned was not about his complaints really, but about the titles that were on Blu. Sorry about that, thanks for the edit.
I will say that I own the same copy of Fireflies that he has, and it SUX! it is the WORST DVD I have ever seen!
BUT, they have recently re-released it on a 2 disc special edition that is much higher quality.
If I remember correctly, not only have they had the rights to Grave of Fireflies longer, Disney was not interested in that title for obvious reason (if you've seen it, you'd know). But I still HIGHLY recommend the movie if you get the better quality.
I will just have to get the new DVD of that since I doubt it will be on Blu in USA anytime soon.
I must say I have been overjoyed by the job Disney has done on these movies. The dubs are excellent, the subtitles are accurate, the quality is unsurpassed. That is why I can't wait to see these on Blu-ray by Disney.

BTW, any word on if the US will see Gedo Senki no Earthsea? I heard that SciFi loses the rights in 2009 and if so, we could see it next year... but I don't know if that is true or not.

These films are a must in any animation collection....I really hope Disney rolls out the Ghibli love next year....just give us the whole Disney/Ghibli collection in a boxset!!! Mononoke, Nausicaa and Spirited Away are my favorites...P.M. is a bit harsh for a Disney release, though...glad they released it under the Miramax label so they wouldn't edit it too much.

Yes, SciFi loses the rights to them next year....

Or, if you are impatient like me, you can pick up a subtitled version on EBay for about $15...

Well....considering mine still has the serial numbers on the disc, I pretty sure it wasn't a bootleg. Trust me....I don't support that garbage, either.

Grave of the Fireflies has different owners/financial backers than the other films (in Japan it's owned by WB). Ironically it was double featured with Totoro theatrically.

The subs were translated by Ghibli quite awhile ago, they aren't Disney's doing

Most bootlegs are pressed in pro plants

If it's not region locked, it's a bootleg. There are no legit R0 versions of Earthsea, or any other Ghibli film except the original issue of Grave of the Fireflies. The only legitimate Ghibli box sets on DVD are the Hong Kong one by IVL (limited to about 2000 copies) and the Borders exclusive "Toss it in a box we made real fast) one. Neither one is complete by any stretch

You can pick it up on Region 3 disc at dddhouse.com or yesasia.com
