Default Onkyo receiver's future lawsuit

It is very likely? i hope not but seeing how these day people will sue over anything. This lawsuit would be huge with consumers blowing their speakers at the cause of defective products.

What is your opinion on this?

There would only cause for a lawsuit if Onkyo makes no effort to make good on the issue. We have no reason at all to believe that they are going to attempt to duck this one.

and it may not even be Onkyo's fault. the issue is that the DTS decoder used by Onkyo and Yamaha (and possibly Pioneer) is faulty. Does that make them liable or the chip mfr? or maybe DTS themselves if they designed the software. remember, DTS HD Master was NOT finalized when Blu-Ray first came out. They might have rushed the product to the market w/o completely testing the software.

I think the problem is going to be that each company involved will finger point.

Ronny Katz over at AVS is already saying it is not a dts problem and the tracks on the suspect discs are 100% compliant with the spec.

I have a feeling that after these early units were introduced, dts made some modifications in the decoding code they provided to the AVR companies. With these newer units dts does not make a decoder but instead the decoding algorithm is just software running inside the receiver's CPU. Hopefully the units in question just require a firmware fix to be rid of the bug.

a dts rep already handed off the issue to recevier mfg. on another site they have quietly made changes for future releases. im sure the receivers mfg will make good fixing the chips after they figure out exactly whats going on. still a little early.
