The AVR 255 is the most affordable Harman Kardon® receiver to feature both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding on the audio side, and Faroudja DCDi Cinema video processing to 1080p on the video side. But there’s plenty more to recommend the AVR 255, including three HDMI inputs, connections for external amplifi ers, EzSet/EQ technology to fine-tune your system to the acoustics of your room, and an RS-232 port for future firmware upgrades. Perhaps the highest recommendation of all? As do all Harman Kardon A/V receivers, the AVR 255 features a high-current, ultrawide-bandwidth design for maximum fidelity.
Key Specifications - Audio Section – Continuous Average Power (FTC), (stereo mode): 65 watts per channel into 8 ohms @ 20Hz – 20kHz, <0.07% THD, both channels driven; (seven-channel surround mode): 50 watts per channel into 8 ohms @ 20Hz – 20kHz, <0.07% THD, all channels driven; High Instantaneous Current Capability (HCC): ±35 amps - Tuner – Usable Sensitivity: IHF 1.3µV/13.2dBf; THD at 1kHz with 100% modulation, (mono): 0.2%; (stereo): 0.3%; FM Adjacent Channel Selectivity: ±400kHz, 70dB; Ultimate (maximum) S/N Ratio (measured at 1mV RF input level), (mono): 70dB; (stereo): 68dB - Dimensions (H x W x D) and weight: 165mm x 440mm x 382mm, 13.6kg Depth measurement includes table stand, knobs, buttons and terminal connections, unless stated otherwise; Power - 50W x 7 into 8 ohms, 20Hz – 20kHz, at <0.07% THD, with all channels driven simultaneously - High-current (±35 amps), ultrawide-bandwidth (10Hz – 100kHz) amplifier design Surround Processing - Full suite of Dolby surround decoding, including Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus using an advanced Cirrus Logic® CS 49700 32-bit DSP processor - Full suite of DTS® modes, including DTS-HD, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-ES® 6.1 Discrete & Matrix, DTS Neo:6® and DTS 96/24TM - Dolby Pro Logic® IIx (Movie, Music and Game modes) surround sound - Harman-exclusive Logic 7 Movie, Music and Game surround sound processing in 5.1 and 7.1 channels - Dolby Headphone and Dolby Virtual Speaker surround modes - Five- and Seven-channel Stereo, Hall and Theater surround modes - 192kHz/24-Bit DACs Connectivity - Three HDMI 1.3a inputs and one HDMI output with 12-bit Deep Color and xvYCC pass-through - Two assignable, wide-bandwidth (100MHz), HDTV-ready component video inputs and one output - Subwoofer output for direct connection to a powered subwoofer - Four A/V inputs with S-video, plus two audio-only inputs - Eight-channel-direct inputs for use with external surround decoders - 7.1 Preamp outputs allow the use of external amplifiers - Convenient front-panel audio/video input with S-video for use with video games or portable players - Six digital inputs (two optical and two coaxial on rear panel, and one optical and one coaxial on front panel) - One coaxial digital output on rear panel - RS-232 port for firmware upgrades - IR remote extension jacks for control of the amplifier when placed in a cabinet - Auxiliary input for connecting portable media players Ease of Use - HDMI 1.3a with audio processing and Faroudja DCDi Cinema video processing with upscaling to 1080p - A/V Sync Delay adjustable for each input - EzSet/EQ equalization for quick and accurate system setup - FM stereo/AM tuner with 30 presets and direct-access tuning - Quadruple-crossover bass manager - Wide range of low-frequency crossover points (40Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz and 200Hz) available - Full-color, high-defi nition, graphical on-screen interface, including HDMI and component video - Programmable power-up volume - Multiroom audio - Surround back amplifier channels configurable for use as second-zone amplification - Seven-device, preprogrammed system remote control ![]() ![]() |

Nice. I had a 247, but it was giving me issues passing 1080p and I thought the video scaling left a LOT to be desired (plus the issue of not being able to turn the damn scaler off). I loved the sound, though. This should be a definite consideration for anyone looking for a receiver.

God they sure are sexxy looking....! I had an AVR-245 before I sold it to get the 605 for HD-sound.(AVR-245 did not support audio through HDMI, thus I couldn't even have my ps3 decode). That has been kind of the downside of getting the onkyo...it's big, bulky and kind of ugly.

From what I understand, the US models will actually be the 154, 254, and 354. The 155, 255, and 355 are for europe.
I'm a bit torn.... I just ordered a 5.1 system from Elemental Designs and I'm not sure if I should hit up the 254 or wait for the 654 this fall (the 654 and 754 are supposedly coming out some time in the fall). Here's a link to the brochure with the X55's- the X54 specs should be similar. http://www.hifi.nl/brochures/harman-brochure-feb08.pdf Still, no matter what I end up doing (I'll probably just get the 254) I'm sure I'll be pleased! |
