For the money I like the Marantz 4001 over it, but that's just because I listen to a lot of music, and find Marantz offers better audio.... it won't have the latest HDMI etc. so for the price range you're looking at, you'll probably be happy with it if HT is the intended use.

I've had Sony, Yamha, Denon and Onkyo. Personally I think you get the most for your money with the new Onkyo recievers.

Onkyo is very easy to use but the x05 models were a huge let down. I had the 805 replacing an 803 (which i loved) and it didn't last 2 weeks in my house. Sound is just plain aweful relative to their previous offerings and other models on the market. Bit the bullet and went for the Denon 3808 and can't be happier. I actually liked the sound on the Marantz 7002 better but c'mon, ethernet port . For the money while the D&M boys lack HDMI plug #s relative to the onkyo, i think the build quality and sound is just so much better that i don't think i'll ever touch an onkyo again.

All that said, sound is personal. As an example: i understand that some people like what i would call "nail on chalkboard bright" sound; I don't. Go listen to the thing before you buy it.

And i must ammend my "can't be happier" statement... i've got my eye set on seperates down the road, and currently drool over and dream about the anthem statement D2/P5 combination.... might have to ***** myself to afford it though... but looking in the mirror shoots that prospect down too C'mon stock market!! Up not down!!

I bought a Pioneer VSX-9120 last weekend, and have been very happy with it. Warm sound, with clear highs, and it's a good sale price right now. It will decode the new HD audio codecs, and works as a video switcher. Will also convert any componant inputs to HDMI for signal out to the TV.

Yes, I'm very happy with it. I use it for all my audio outputs. TV, games, Blu-ray, DVD, all of it. It's probably the easiest receiver I've ever set up and used. The only problem that I had with it, is that it comes from the factory with the HDMI audio set up to go through the receiver, straight to the TV for output. But a couple button pushes on the remote solves that, and the audio is output by the receiver. The sound is better than my older receiver, and the channel separation is much more distinct.

I actually went out late last night and picked up that Pioneer.... I went down to Vision's first to hear the Onkyo's that they have and then they also had the Pioneer... and honestly they both sounded amazing! I couldnt tell the diff. between the two... maybe it was just my untrained ear Dunno.... but anyways I went to Futureshop and picked up the Pioneer... simply amazing...

Thanks for the heads up on that one!!!!
