Default What is Profile 2.0 actually?

Hi fellow members,

I am looking for a BluRay player and trying to find out what matters and what doesn't in the jungle of specifications.

There is a good thread about the different BD profiles, but I didn't quite feel that it made it totally clear what the 2.0 can actually do and if it is worth paying/waiting for...

Does anyone have some input/experience concerning this?

Martin

we don't know yet,it should do what hd dvd did and more.
i would buy a player with 2.0 anyway,in another year all players will have it.
you can't lose even if you don't use it.

Well, according to some HD-DVD supporters, BD-Live is a method for Sony to spy on Blu-Ray customers like the rootkit fiasco of a few years ago.

You can get the PS3, which is 2.0. Or you can get the Panasonic DMP BD-50, which is going to be released May 1,2008. The Panasonic DMP BD-50 is BD-Live and can internally decode and bitstream all the lossless audios including DTS-HD MA.

Default Thanks

Hi,

Ok, thanks for the input.

I guess I will get one with 2.0 then.
I have a 47" Philips PFL9732 - so thinking about getting a Philips BluRay too...
Any idea about if they will launch one with 2.0?

Panasonic seems interesting...

no. 2.0 is in essence a way for your player to work with content that is not on the disk. What will it be, who knows because it is dynamic. It is like angles on DVD they where added and remotes have that button but except, from what I hear, some porn titles the rest did not use it to give you choices on camera angles.

Some of the examples given (some interesting, others scary, and others just dumb) where

- extra subtitles for more obscure languages.
- extra last minute content or content that did not fit on disk (same extras that could be on disk)
- on-line java games tied into the movie
- forum/polls (question of the week, reviews/message boards on the movie)
- changing community content (i.e. Disney’s example, all week kids vote and then Friday they have a "tea-party" with the winning princess, so one week it is Cinderella and the next Jasmine
- shopping. Click in a frame and then it brings you to a website where you can buy the lamp or table or something seen in the shot
- advertisement (given by MS for HDi but could be on 2.0) you watch the movie, a crash happens, so now a popup appears telling you X 's coverage(where X can change depending on who wishes to sponsor) ...... and if you want to continue to the web site to get a quote.
- new (forced) trailers for new movies, he machine checks, if new trailers are available it DL them and plays them instead of the trailers DLed last week.

Sounds like stuff I don't want!!! I'll leave my ethernet port unplugged.

I have found that you can now buffer files over the internet, and saving them to the HDD is much more difficult. I wonder if I like the change or not.
