Default Does this sound legit?

I'm selling my camera trying to upgrade to a newer model and so I threw it on craig's list. Well I got an e-mail from someone ready to purchase it and this was the e-mail I got back from them...

Quote:
From: Charlene Colt (charlenecolt@gmail.com)

I was just about checking for your email, would have come to pick it up
myself but am out of town at the moment. am buying this camera as a
birthday gift for my niece who is in west Africa, i will like you to
help me deliver it to her before her birthday, and i will be adding
$100 for shipment expenses through
postal service express mail (USPS).

Payment will be through PayPal, because of my job i can't
make cash transaction at the moment, just send me PayPal money request
to this email, so i can make payment immediately and if you don't go
to paypal website and signup for an account
If "she" picked up my PayPal address, what damage could be done? Should I just ignore the e-mail or even bother sending a PayPal request to see what happens? Anything outside of the USA I usually just dismiss but I kind of figured PayPal could back me up on this one...but idk.

edit: also the e-mail I'm using to respond to her is not associated with my PayPal or eBay account, those go to other e-mails to prevent anything from happening to them.

Go with your "gut". If you're at all doubtful for whatever reason....don't proceed. I'm sure someone will come along and express interest in the camera.

The moment you see the word "Africa", move along. There's lots of scams coming from there these days.

Run, don't walk away.

My dad put a VW bus on Craigslist about a year ago. His email was full of all kinds of variations of the "Nigerian" scam. My rule on Craigslist is cash only and neutral location for pick up. If they don't agree, they really don't want the item. I've sold dozens of items there and had no issues doing things that way.

SCAM!!!!

I had almost the same exact e-mail when I sold my camera on Craigslist, except they said they were more specific and instead of "Africa" they said "Egypt." A camera lens I was selling was the Nigerian version of the scam.

Stay away and wait it out for other offers.

I'm assuming they meant Chris Hansen.

He's known for his great show To Catch a Predator, and less known for the spin-off To Catch an I.D. Thief.

Yea the same thing happened to one of my co-worker about a house. And she actually went to look at the house and there was a realtor there, but not the one that she was supposed to meet. Come to find out it was a HUGE scam and she was lucky that coincidence ran her into a legit person.

You don't know how many times I got emails from people in Nigeria wanting to "buy" my stuff. I went just send it to the junk.

Since this thread is still going, I'll add a story...

A few years ago, I tried to find someone to take over my end of an apartment lease, when I finished school (originally the lease was scheduled to end when I finished school, but after changing roommates, they forced us to extend it).

So anyhow, among some legit emails, I got one from a woman in London. She was apparently moving to the US in a few weeks, and was looking for a place to live. Some research was done, because she mentioned getting an IT job in a nearby area (about 10 miles away), which is huge for IT stuff.

It started to sound more odd when she mentioned she'd be shipping her car (a new BMW, which she said she'd even let me use), as well as all her furniture (wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a new bed when you get here?).

I played along with it for a while, and eventually she said she'd mail me a check to cover her expenses for moving in. I was supposed to deposit it in my account, and then pay for her stuff to get shipped. Kind of odd.

So a couple days later, a priority FedEx envelope arrived, fresh from Nigeria. I threw it in the trash, and that was the end of it.

I was glad that I at least scammed them out of the $20 or $30 that it cost them to mail me the forged forms.
