Default onkyo 805 speaker levels "HELP"

I ran audyssey last night and the receiver set the 7 speakers to negitive Numbers Example fronts -6 db(level) What if i increase the levels should'nt i not have to turn the volume(on Receiver)up as loud. I am not understanding Auddyssey. Also should i change the speakers to 80 hertz(thx)? Also why does the volume start on -80? Sorry i am a newby and not understanding. THanx for any help you can give.

generally they're given by decibles..... I don't own an Onkyo, so I've only listened to them in showrooms, and I'm not sure about your setup etc, but did you try to reset all levels, then run the auto-setup again? Might be an anomoly!

I have the 705 and Audyssey did the same thing. The sub is at level -15. I left the values at the Audyssey levels. I then changed the crossover on my

front towers to 60hz from full
Surrounds and Surround Back 80hz from full.

I was amazed at how much better everything sounded after audyssey ran. The sound was distributed more evenly as well. So much for thinking I know more than Onkyo engineers!
It may be that increasing the individual channel levels is more taxing on the receiver than the single volume control.

Default levels

Im not sure what the levels are for and why negitive numbers are set by the receiver. WHy dont receivers just always set speakers to +12 DB and then you would not have to turn it up as loud.

Default 805

Not sure but i think this onkyo has to be the worst sounding receiver i have ever heard by far. I am not sure why but like i said the onkyo 505 which comes in the HTIB will out perform the 805 all day. I am just mad because i waited 1 month for it to be shipped and i was so excited to have this receiver and then to find it is the worst thing ever made.

welcome to my world now go make your self happy and buy a Denon.

on a personal note, i haven't used Audessy and ever liked what it did. I just go manually by ear and love how my 3808 turned out.

Then you have a problem with your setup.

The levels are all referencing the sub level. During the audessey setup, it tries to match the levels of al your speakers with reference to the SUBWOOFER level. This means that your sub level should approach 0 while all other speakers are referenced above or below that. So if your front left speaker shows -6dB that means the level was lowered that much to keep it even with the sub. Keep in mind that your speaker placement is important here. If you're getting a very high or very low number for the sub level then turn it's volume down to adjust and re-run the setup. Ideally the sub level should be as close to 0dB as possible with the other speakers adjusted accordingly.

The volume starts at -80dB relative to the reference volume (the reference level used by the sound engineers during the film making process. That would be 0dB). You can change it so the level is output as an absolute value instead of a relative one then it will start at 0 but it makes no difference in terms of audio.

If you think the 505 HTIB sounds better then the 805 then that's your opinion. But seeing as you're the only one who thinks so I'm 100% sure you're doing something wrong. Set up your receiver correctly and then listen.

THe onkyo, no joke, makes my polk speakers make a popping noise and the bass sounds like im in a low rider. The way i had my settings on the onkyo 505 it sounded good and i spend 800 dollars to make it sound worse. Sorry for the venting i am just trying to get these polks sounding good

Make sure you hooked them up right. No stray wires etc. I have the 805 and Polk RTi8's and it seriously sounds better then every other receiver I listened to. Yours is either broken or you're doing something wrong I guarantee it.

It's a refurb. That explains your anger at .................yourself. I would never trade my Onkyo. It switches flawlessly and sounds fantastic.

That popping noise is called "clipping" whatever you do, if you reconnect everything, etc. and it still does that.... STOP USING THAT RECEIVER. send it back if possible, because clipping is about the worst thing you can do to your speakers.

If you're putting out "dirty power" there is something wrong with it..... all I know, is that a receiver, even a garage-sale find, shouldn't have noticeable "pops" or static to the speakers.

Refurb that maybe wasn't properly tested.... I don't know man.... I'd send it back....
