Default XDE - Toshiba still hasn't given up

http://www.toshibaxde.com/

Apparently Toshiba still wants to steal some of Blu-ray's thunder. So they're making some fancy upscalers with "Xtended Detail Enhancement"...

Of course, it's upscaling, edge enhancement, saturation boost, exposure modification, and contrast adjustment.

So it's like playing with the picture settings on any photo editor. Gee, that's REALLY great.

BUT, they say, it's not, because it analyzes the picture and only applies the enhancement to areas that "need it".

So it's like playing with those same photo controls, only you have a certain part selected. Forgive me for still not being blown away.

Not to mention you don't decide where you want enhancement, the computer does. Which introduces the possibility for all sorts of screwups you can't do anything about.

Their whole selling point is that it's cheaper than Blu-Ray.
Well... it's still not HD. It does nothing for the sound.

They even advertise as "NEAR" HD quality.

Assuming the computer doesn't screw up the enhancement.

I'll stick with Blu-ray, thanks.

toshiba would probably make more money if they manufactured BD players and integrated this XDE technology into it and advertise that....then they may make some money.

with bd players getting down to a possible $130 mark at walmart for black friday, a plain 'ole dvd player better not cost more than $40...

The player has been a bust, more or less, considering Toshiba's high hopes for it.
They wanted to advertise it as "the next best thing to blu ray", but after a slew of unimpressed reviews (and a few pretty good ones, granted), the XDE is just branded "yet another decent DVD upscaler". In fact, it even scares some people due to some less than perfect upscaling on some average DVD titles. After all that hype, the king of Upscaling is still the Oppo 983H it seems...

The thing is, with Blu Ray Players prices going down fast, they even have to offer a 50 euro reimbursement in Europe, making their "superior upscaling" player a mere 50-80 euro buy. They must lose their shirt on this one guys.

Only one XDE player is available in the US, at a $150 MSRP.

Toshiba isn't going to be moving very many of those "XDE" players at all unless retailers mark them down well under $100 price level. They would probably even need to go under $75 or even $50 for that matter.

After Black Friday, certain Blu-ray players will be available under the $150 price level.

Toshiba, give it up already! "You Meet your match you will fall! Only one of can wear the crown", and blu is wearing that crown! "Look around you lost your team, you tried your best but ran out of steam!" Up scaling is useless anyways! But if they want to keep trying i say bring it on!

After the VHS versus Beta format war in the 1980s Sony swallowed its pride and made VHS tape decks.

Toshiba will have to swallow its pride and start making some Blu-ray players. There's no other way around it for them.

If Toshiba keeps pulling its stunts with DVD it's going to have a harmful effect on sales of their other electronics devices. There is a kind of "halo effect" when it comes to the strength of a brand and its line of electronics.

Someone needing a new Blu-ray player and a new HDTV will be more inclined to buy products from the same brand. A customer who buys a Samsung BD player will probably be more likely to buy a Samsung HDTV. Companies like Sony understand this and emphasize the point by having similar brand names to tie products together, like the "Bravia Link" thing. Toshiba sells HDTV monitors, but no Blu-ray players. That a product line deficiency.

lol that is most likely true for any Samsung product. On the other hand Bobby is right. Not only do people tend to buy the same brands when buying multiple equipment but most stores have specials that make it more interesting. So it does not only cost them player sales but also HDTV sales.
