Default blu ray presentation questions and help please

Tomorrow I have to give a presentation in my business class over an article about toshiba surrending to sony. I have a few questions

Was blu ray founded by sony? Who has the patent? Arent there like 10 blu ray manufactureres now? I was just wondering how it all got started and who controls what.

Also, i was trying to get some input on my last slide.

It consists of Blu-ray vs DVD and I wanted to talk about the next steps for blu ray and the obstacles they have to overcome. here is what i have so far....

blu-ray still has a long battle to fight against the well established dvd. The demand for blu-ray is going to come down to how sony and other manufacturers approach pricing. It is estimated that blu-ray will represent far less than 25% of disc players sold until the price falls below $200. With technology changing so rapidly it is extrememly hard to predict outcomes. I think blu-ray will slowly take over DVD, but will be heavily competing against other substitutes like digital downloading.

It is a little short. Any input or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I cant think of a strong closing statement either.

toss this statement out.

Digital downloads of HD movies is no where near realistic.

(or you could say digital downloading could pose a threat, but not for a long time to come)

The best way to find more info on blu-ray is to browse the internet or google. For your closing statement, say " Blu-ray will go where no man has ever gone before!"

"Despite Sony's history of botching the introduction of new, albeit superior technologies to the consumer marketplace (MiniDisc, BetaMax, et al), it seems they may have done it right this time. Blu-ray is here to stay."

ya, good point bad wording on my part. I am looking at it as several years down the road.

What do you think about verizon fios though? The town my parents live in got wired for verizon fios and they get their basic internet speed which is still pretty damn fast. Their top speed is suppose to be incredibly fast but its very pricey still.

I think it was you that mentioned isp talks of capping download speeds, which would definetely set back digital downloads. I guess i have blinders on when it comes to technology timeframes. I dont know much about technology, so I apologize if i sound ignorant.

Ya, thats what I started doing at first but i got a huge headache. It was taking way too long to weed my way through the endless amounts of information (most of which I did not need to learn or care to learn) I got my presentation tomorrow and I am in a bad time crunch. Just wanted to pick at some peoples brains and get opinions and ideas from all different angles. Lots of very knowledable people here and just want to thank everyone for so generously helping me out.

A very important point is bitrate : a DVD is about 5 Mbits/scd, Blu-ray is 54 Mbits/scd, a HD download (usually 720p) is 2-4 Mbits/scd, it defines the amount of data that is trasferred from the source (player) to the screen, so even if the file is 720p it won't appear as 720p on screen as the speed os the transfer is way lower.
I need to say that Microsoft broadcasts to XBOX live some "HD movies", but they're only 720p with low bitrate so on screen it will look like an upscaled DVD at best.

check : http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=959 3rd paragraph or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bit_rate near end of page

Digital downloads have a huge issue with the fact the infrastructure can't support that on a large scale right now which is where capping comes into play.

Ignore the speed that comes into your single house for a second. Here are numbers for the whole network that will show the issue.

On most cable networks right now, the MEDIAN user is around 3-4G a month. You won't get one HD movie in that bandwidth and that is the usage that the network is based on.

If we move out a level - a single cable node had a bandwidth of around 30-40mbps and servers around 300-400 households on average. So even if your house had 8mbps available, it is easy to see the system is not designed to everybody to be using that all the time. In fact, if 20 households out of 400 on the node try to download a movie on a Saturday night, you are down to only 2mbps available for each house and it only get worse if that increases.

That is the reasons they want to cap users - the current infrastructure is not setup to enable large-scale downloading. The system is setup for most people to use less then 3Gig a month.
