Default 20th Century Fox

Hey everyone! I'm new to this whole thing, but I love blu-ray!

I just have a question in regards to the blu-ray discs from 20th Century Fox. Does anybody know WHY they don't put Dolby Digital 5.1 on all of their blu-ray discs? I don't have a new surround sound and I don't think my family is planning on getting a new one anytime soon, so I rely on Dolby Digitial 5.1, which many of the other companies use on their discs (e.g. Sony).
Thanks!
(e.g. Really want Predator, but it has Dolby Digital 4.0)

They have DTS Master Audio, which all players can pull a standard DTS core track from. The same applies to Dolby TrueHD tracks. Virtually any reciever made since 2000 contains dtS decoding

Thanks! I know that Dolby TrueHD tracks work because that's on my Spider-Man 3 and it works. I have I, Robot which only has English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and it does not work with my receiver. It automatically goes to Prologic II. I could switch the audio language and put on subtitles for the Dolby experience, but that would just be silly.

If you don't have a receiver that has a DTS decoder you will be out of luck when it comes to Fox films.

What player do you have?

Are you sure your player is set to bitstream and not PCM for regular DTS?

you can use the multichannel out and have the player decode the audio and send as PCM

Ouch, I think I can say right now that my receiver is too old to do DTS-HD and PCM (it can do Dolby TrueHD). One of the things that's holding my family back from getting a new receiver is that ours works perfectly fine, but also the wires going to the back speakers and the sub go through the walls and under the floor to get to the speaker.
Is there any way I could buy an add on or something that will allow me to do DTS-HD without getting a new receiver? I'll list my important connections:

NAD: AV Surround Sound T762 (Optical 1 to TV)
60GB PS3 (HDMI to TV, Optical to Optical 2 for the receiver, settings are on Bitstream)

Wait a sec, should I just get a new receiver by itself that does HDMI and 5.1?

You can do Dolby Digital, not THD.
You can reuse your wires with a new reciever adn your speakers

If you have analog 6-channel inputs, then I recommend buying a new BD player with analog out.

Either way, it's going to be expensive. I suggest buying the cheapest reciever you can find that will handle PCM in

Thanks a lot, I'm currently looking on Best Buy and Futureshop (Canada) to see what they have. I only have 5.1 with my receiver and my family is not looking to upgrade to 6 or 7.1. Any suggestions for what I should look for?

P.S. I'm using a DLP tv that can't automatically read 1080p signals, so it deinterlaces 1080i and converts it to 1080p (does a great job at it too!)

It doesn't matter if they have 5.1 or 7.1

Are you sure you're not using a 720p set? I'm betting you are. A 1080p set would take 1080p signals

Yup, I am totally sure. It explains it in the instruction manual. I found out that it's using something called "modulation". The picture is amazing though.

It doesn't matter if the receiver is 5.1 or 7.1, GREAT! Is there anything I should make sure that the new receiver has to be able to do DTS-HD, or things like that?

This receiver is nicely priced and gives you what you need. It is owned by many members here, including myself.

Bear in mind that although the Onkyo has HDMI input, it is also a far cheaper unit than yours and will not sound as good on your other inputs. If i were you i would buy a player that outputs all the formats over analog multichannel and keep your Nad.

I have the Pioneer VSX-9120 found at BestBuy right now for $700. It has HDMI 1.3 and will decode Dolby TruHD and DTS-HD MA. I got it for $650, but $700 isn't bad either.

optical can only carry 2ch PCM, that could be what you are sending out. If not go to menu options in the PS3 and see what you are outputting over optical. And see what your receiver can handle (obviously it won't be DTHD or DTS-HD MA or PCM5.1 but if it can do DTS then add that to your optical out.

Wobulation you mean?

Still, a 1080p set should take 1080p signals....

Ooops, my bad! Yes it is wobulation, Toshiba apparently did that to save money or something. My PS3 is even receiving a 1080i signal, but my tv set is making it 1080p. The instruction manual says that is what is happenning and the tv can handle 1080p (just not the signal) and also, my tv doesn't have that awesome gold sticker that says 1080P on it.

Well thanks for the help and suggestions everyone! I'm leaning towards the Pioneer one, but my family will be waiting at least until the summer to get a new one.

All DLPs use wobulation. It moves too fast that you never notice

PS3s don't recieve anything

Can you give us the model number of your TV?

I seriously think that you're getting a 1080i signal that your TV then converts to 720p

I've never heard of a TV that is 1080p, but can't accept a 1080p signal
