Default 3.70...DolbyTruHD, Dolby Digital Plus on BDP S1

With the new firmware upgrade, will the advanced audio codecs output over the 5.1 analog outputs, or will you still need a receiver that can decode via HDMI?

I have a BDP-S1 on the way and was curious. Thanks for the info.

Yes, you will get the decoded sound from the analog outputs and the HDMI connection to a receiver that can decode LPCM!! Enjoy!!

I thought the S1 was TrueHD over HDMI only?

I could be wrong...

Default This Player converts Dolby True HD to 5.1 PCM via HDMI

I don't have the Sony BDP S1 player but the almost identical Pioneer BDP-HD1 player. Several Firmware versions ago, this player converts Dolby True HD to 5.1 PCM sound. Great Quality, but I wouldn't know how Dolby True HD sounds via a receiver that can decode it versus the player decoding it to PCM.

Yes. S1 will decode TrueHD to 5.1 PCM. It will not pass it undecoded to your receiver. You will have to set your player to PCM instead of Auto. DD+ should go either way.

I hate to bump the thread, but yes...the original question was whether or not TrueHD or DD+ could be done over 5.1 analogue...and yes, it can, it's what I'm doing right now.

Yeah, but I thought the S1 and S300 updates were identical. That is why Paid says the S300 got TrueHD when the S1 did.

The S1 got the update long ago (has been posted on the update page for some time now)...at least to my knowledge the 300 was recent.

People using the analog outputs are probably getting the core Dolby tracks and thinking they're the TrueHD one. I know I was having issues figuring out which audio track I was listening to at first since it always says regular Dolby Digital when you press the audio button.

So in order to use the TrueHD tracks with the BDP-S1, you need:

1. A recievier that accepts audio from over HDMI

2. Set the BDP-S1 to PCM for the audio out

3. In the menu, select Dolby TrueHD. DO NOT PRESS THE AUDIO BUTTON TO GET TO THE TRUEHD TRACK!!! If you do this, the player seems to default back to the core instead of decoding the TrueHD track.

Hope this helps!

I watched Spiderman 3 and selected Dolby TrueHD under audio options. I have the S1 connected to my Denon AVR-5805 via the 5.1 analog out of the S1. What am I listening to?

There seems to be a lot of conflicting information on this.

I thought that was just on the bdp-s300?

I was almost sure the BDP-s1 did trueHD over 5.1 analog or HDMi, but just read DD no matter what.

however according to Paid, it's only via HDMI

Oh well, either one of those players are a clunky mess. And my bd-1400 runs circles around them speed & funtionality wise.
