Default Has Blu-ray ever considered doing combo DVD/BD discs?

making dual format like blu-ray/dvd like hd-dvds did? That would be nice.

i highly doubt it. it wasnt even that popular among the hd-dvd folks so i doubt it will happen to Blu-Ray. there is only a couple of titles like that but the ones i know of are only anime ones from bandai but thats not the same idea. but you can get a digital copy of the movie and put it into a DVD-R if you want that comes in select Blu-ray movies

Since the concept didn't work out for HD DVD, i doubt Blu-ray will see the need for something like this. It would only add to the cost to produce the discs, while probably the majority of customers wouldn't even want that "feature".

And now that DVD is the major competitior in movie sales, not likely. We're trying to get Blu-Ray to be the standard media format.

Dvd will be phased out within the next few years so Blu-ray is going to take its place. thats why we had this format war in the 1st place so that we can have a new format to take Dvd's place

I thought it was a great idea. I liked it because I could get the high def format for me and when I took it to my girlfriends house or my parents house to watch a movie with them, we would use the dvd.

ive bought probably 35 blu-rays and I havent had one come with a digital copy yet.......

Good point, but it would increase the price of blu disc's and with the price of DVD's being cheap as chips you might as well buy the DVD and take that over to the parents/girlfriend.

Less chance of a damaged blu disc also

Thankfully the Blu companies never adopted this idea.

Wouldn't the BDA have to pay DVD royalties then?

No... it wouldn't! The quality of the Hi-Def version of the film would suffer due to extra compression to store it on the reduced disc space. You have to understand that approx 1/5 of the disc would get swallowed up by the DVD version, thus forcing compression to fit video and the elimination of HD audio tracks... just to fit an inferior version of the film onto a format that literally does NOTHING to help the DVD version.

I would oppose Blu-ray combo discs, look at what happpened when HD DVD did that, it caused more problems and increased the cost of the disc. It's not worth it.

JVC developed a combo BD/DVD disc back in 2005. Seeing as how 0 titles have been released in that format, though, I'm gonna say the idea didn't appeal all that much to studios.

Even when I collected DVDs, I avoided dual-sided discs. I hate the idea of needing a magnifying glass to figure out which side to play. It has always been and continues to be an annoyance. The combo format contributed to my ultimate decision to choose Blu-ray over HD DVD. If I also want the DVD (for some strange reason) I can go out and buy it.

Read the following thread. It explains why it was possible to have a DVD/HD-DVD disc and why it is technically difficult or perhaps impossible to have a dual DVD/BD disc.
