Online Storage for Game Saves Coming to PlayStation Plus

Hey everyone – We’ve got an exciting new feature coming exclusively to PlayStation Plus subscribers. Included in the system software update (v3.60) coming tomorrow to PS3, PlayStation Network’s new online storage for game saves feature gives PlayStation Plus subscribers the capability to back up game save data to the cloud. Online storage for game saves is a great way for PlayStation Plus subscribers to ensure that their data files are secure and also for users who wish to access their files from other PS3 systems.

The new online storage feature allows gamers to store up to 150MB of game save data and a maximum of 1000 data files per PSN account. Users also have the ability to back-up “copy-prohibited save data,” and all previously saved data may be restored once per 24 hour period. When the new feature launches, most PS3 titles will be compatible with online storage for game saves, and moving forward, all new titles will have the capability to offer the storage option.

As I mentioned before, online storage for game saves functionality is included automatically for PlayStation Plus subscribers with system software update (v3.60), which will be available on March 10, 2011, and users can access their stored data on the XMB at any time. Additionally, users who save their files to the cloud can access their data on any PS3, using their PSN sign-in ID.

PlayStation Plus subscribers should turn on the auto-download feature to ensure that the update will begin downloading as soon as it’s available, so you can start backing up your game saves right away. If you aren’t already a PlayStation Plus subscriber, be sure to check out our bi-weekly post highlighting the free games, discounts and exciting exclusives we offer, in addition to the upcoming online storage for game saves feature.

• PlayStation®Network Area of Photo Gallery

[PlayStation®Network Area] has been added under [Photo Gallery]. You can now use Photo Gallery to browse photos from Facebook® or Picasa™ Web Albums. You can also share photos from Photo Gallery with your Friends on PlayStation Network.

• Video Editor & Uploader

Using the video editing and uploading feature, you can now edit video content that is saved on your PS3 system's hard disk and upload it to Facebook or YouTube™.

Other new or revised features in version 3.40

Settings

• [Deep Color Output (HDMI)] has been added as an option under [Display Settings].
• [Automatic Download] has been added as a feature under [System Settings]. This feature is exclusively for use by PlayStation Plus members.
• The default setting for [System Auto-Off] under [Power Save Settings] has been changed to [After 2 Hours].

Photo

• You can now print a photo in [Photo Gallery].
• You can now delete a photo in [Photo Gallery].

Friends

• You can now see the trophy level of a Friend by selecting the Friend’s avatar.

Other

• You can now use a five-star rating system to evaluate products that you purchase from PlayStation Store.
• The internal clock functionality that accounts for leap years has been improved.

New or revised features in version 3.30

Settings

• You can now select [PC] as an option under [Remote Play Settings] > [Register Device]. When you select this option, you will be able to use the remote play feature to operate your PS3 system from future models of the VAIO PC. Details of this feature will be announced on the official VAIO website at vaio.eu/playstation in May 2010.
• [Bitstream (Direct)] and [Bitstream (Mix)] have been added as options under [Video Settings] > [BD Audio Output Format (Optical Digital)].
• 3D stereoscopic games are now supported. At the time of the system software release, there are no 3D stereoscopic games available for the PlayStation 3 system. The release of 3D stereoscopic games will be announced at a later date. If the TV in use supports 3D stereoscopic display, the screen from which you can set the TV size will be displayed when adjusting the video output settings. Follow the on-screen instructions to adjust the settings.

Game

• You can now sort your trophies by the game title or by the date earned.
• Names of trophies that you have not yet earned are now displayed as [Hidden Trophy] instead of [???].

PS3 System Software Update – 3.15

Hi Guys

The next system software update for PS3 will be available very soon. Update 3.15 is an optional update and has two key features which are explained below –

‘minis’ come to PS3:

We launched minis for PSP back in October but from the 17th December you will be able to enjoy these bite size games on your PS3 as well as your PSP. This firmware update allows the minis emulator to work on PS3 and we are working on getting the majority of the current minis ready for the PS3 from the 17th December.

Check out great titles like ‘Blast off’ (8.5/10 – IGN), ‘Fieldrunners’, “a wonderfully crafted casual nugget” (8/10 – Eurogamer) or ‘Kahoots’, “a must-buy” (8/10 – Videogamer).

If you buy a minis game from the 17th it will work on both platforms so if you have a PS3 and a PSP you will only need to buy it once and it will be available to download to your PS3 and your PSP.

If you have already bought a mini for PSP and want to get it on your PS3 as well, just go to your download list in the Store and download it again for free. The game will then work on your PS3 as well. Simple!

PS3 Data Transfer:

This feature enables you to easily transfer all of your saved data from one PS3 to another. So if you decide to get a new PS3 you can make sure you don’t lose any of your existing content. Content such as games, game save data, and videos downloaded from PlayStation Network can be transferred to the new PS3 system and deleted from the current PS3. Other content, including personal media files (photos, music, videos), can be copied onto the new PS3 and remain on the current PS3 system.

The process is really simple

1. Turn both the current PS3 (A) and new PS3 (B) on and connect them with a LAN cable; PS3 (A) should be connected to the TV
2. On the XMB of PS3 (A), scroll to the Settings menu and select [System Settings] and then [Data Transfer Utility]
3. Follow the instructions on-screen and transfer data
4. After transferring the data, follow the instructions on-screen, and then connect PS3 (B) to the TV to view the XMB
5. If content that was downloaded from PlayStation Store was transferred as part of this operation, you must activate PS3 (B) before you can use the data. Log in to the PS3 system as the user who owns the content, and then select (PlayStation Network) > (Account Management) > (System Activation) to activate the system

Video

• You can now selectively back up content (file type MNV) that was downloaded from the Video Store of PlayStation®Store and you can restore files that you selectively backed up to the same PS3™ system. You can use this feature to back up both SD (standard definition) and HD (high definition) resolution content.

Game

• You can now easily search the Internet for information about your PLAYSTATION®3 format software, as well as for games you purchased from PlayStation®Store. Select the icon for the game, and then select [Internet Search] from the options menu to get search results based on the game title.

Network

• You can now copy and paste text from a Web page viewed in the Internet browser.
• [Copy Address of This Page] and [Copy Address of This Link] have been added as options under [File] in the browse mode menu of the Internet browser.
• [Browser Security] has been added as an option to the browse mode menu of the Internet browser. The websites for the Web filtering services that used to be listed under [Bookmarks] have been moved under this new option.

Friends

• The order in which Friends are listed in the Friends list has been changed. You can now sort by name (alphabetical order) and by status, listing both online and offline Friends by the last time online. When you have pending requests to add Users as Friends, the icons for these Users are now displayed at the top of the Friends list.
• The maximum size for files that can be attached to messages has been increased to 3MB.

Other

• Polish, Greek, Czech, Slovak, and Turkish can now be displayed in the Internet browser.

• Estimated time until completion is now displayed for foreground downloads.
• Quicker webpage rendering and exit.
• Quicker trophy display.
• Trophy Comparison: unplayed games now marked with '-' rather than '0%'.

Friends

Text chat



You can now text chat with people on your Friends list. You can also participate in text chat during gameplay.

Starting text chat

1. Select (Start New Chat) under (Friends).
2. Select (Text Chat).
3. Enter a name for the text chat room.
4. Select the Friends that you want to invite to chat, and then select [OK].

The text chat screen is displayed. The chat will begin as soon as someone joins the chat.

• Up to 16 people can join a chat room.
• You can use a connected keyboard or wireless keypad (each sold separately) for text entry.

Joining a text chat

If you are invited to text chat, a notification message will be displayed at the top right corner of the screen. Select (Chat Room (Text Only)) under (Friends), and then select the chat room that you want to join.

• You can join up to three chat rooms at the same time.
• Up to 20 chat rooms can be displayed in (Chat Room (Text Only)).

Leaving a chat room

1. During a text chat, press the button.
2. Press the button, and then select [Leave] from the options menu.

• If you turn off the PS3™ system or sign out from PlayStation®Network, you will automatically leave the chat room. If you join a chat room again after leaving it, the record of chat entries sent while you were gone will not be displayed.

Text chat during gameplay

1. Press the PS button while playing a game.
2. Select (Chat Room (Text Only)) under (Friends).
3. Select a chat room.
   Press the PS button to return to the game screen.

• Some games do not allow you to join a text chat during gameplay.
• To leave a chat room during gameplay, follow the same steps, but in step 3 press the button and then select [Leave] from the options menu.
• You will not be able to use the text chat feature if restrictions on its use are set under the PlayStation®Network sub account settings.
  For information about parental control settings, see "Using the parental control settings" in the online user's guide.

Settings

Dynamic Normalizer

[Dynamic Normalizer] has been added as an option to (Music Settings) under (Settings).

When you are playing music that is saved on the hard disk drive or storage media, you can use this setting to reduce the difference in volume levels between music tracks when the tracks are played.

Off : Do not use dynamic normalizer.
On : Use dynamic normalizer.

Video

Backup and restore

You can now selectively back up content (file type MNV) that was downloaded from the Video Store of PlayStation®Store and you can restore files that you selectively backed up to the same PS3™ system. You can use this feature to back up both SD (standard definition) and HD (high definition) resolution content.

Backing up a video file

Connect storage media, and then select the icon of the content that you want to back up. Press the button, and then select [Back Up] from the options menu. The (Backup Data Utility) folder will automatically be created on the storage media and the content will be saved.

• Depending on the PS3™ system in use, you may need a USB adaptor (commercially available) to use storage media.

Restoring a video file that you backed up

Content that was backed up to storage media can be restored to the PS3™ system. Connect storage media, and then select the storage media icon under (Video). Select the content that you want to restore from (Backup Data Utility).

• If the folder name or file name of backed up content has been changed, you may not be able to restore that content.
• If you perform any of the following operations after backing up, files in the backup data may not restore correctly.
  • Format the hard disk
  • Restore the PS3™ system

Network

Copy and paste

You can now copy text from a page in the Internet browser, and then paste it into a text box or message.

Copying text

1. Using the left stick, move the pointer to the location of the text that you want to copy, and then press the button.
2. Hold down the button and move the left stick of the controller to select the text.
3. Release the button at the end of the text that you want to copy.
4. Select [Copy] from the menu that is displayed.

Pasting copied text

You can paste copied text into a text box or message when the on-screen keyboard is displayed.

1. Select [Paste] from the on-screen keyboard.
2. A list of text items that have been copied from the Internet browser will be displayed.
   Select the text that you want to paste, and then press the button.

• When using a connected keyboard (commercially available), you can press CTRL + V to paste previously copied text.

I am eagerly waiting to see the next firmware hopfully fix this whole 720p/1080i issue.

The hardware is there. You just have to have something in place to tell it what to do.

1) Improvement at management of accounts.

2) Some minor fix of audio issue. For example, if you using optical audio out on 1.10 firmware, after watching DVD or BR, audio out sometimes disabled. This problem was fixed.

3)Possibly, unknown stability improvement.

that audio was a problem. Id go from watching a movie to playing a game, and there was no sound. I had to reset the system, and it would be fixed.

My friend showed me this happening on his. He'll be pleased to note that's been fixed.

I'm still a little confused with all the FUD going around about the PS3. My question is if i have a HDTV that is a 1366 x 768p, will the PS3 convert 720p and 1080i games well on my tv? This is the only thing keeping me from purchasing a PS3, since the firmware is a ?????? Help!

All that matters is that your TV's connections ACCEPT and DISPLAY 720p and 1080i.

If yours is what I think it is, you shouldn't have any problems whatsoever. All you would do is check on every resolution in the dashboard except 1080p and you'd be off to the races no worries.

Hello BIGSAPOTEER. My HDTV set is 1366 x 768 too, and there is no problem.
If your HDTV set capable 720p, video signal should be automatically up or downscaled to display resolution(1366 x 768) by display side.

Thnaks a lot guys. My TV does accept 720p and 1080i (although it down converts it to 720p). I have Time Warner HD and my TV looks the same between 720p and 1080i programs, so i should be ok, right? My tv is a LG 1366 x 768p LCD, bought 5 months ago. If its no problem, I'm getting a PS3 tonight through e-bay .

Today, "Impress PC watch" have carried an interview about future update plans about picture quality of Playstation 3.

According to this interview, SEC is planning at least four improvement at present.

First, YCrCb color output to be implemented next firmware update planned on December 8. Color accuracy and color range of BR will be improved by this update.

Next, SCE become go to start work for DVD upscaling. This will not to be 'simple upscaling', but aimig at being equal to the upscale processing with an upper-grade PC scaling software.

In addition, a work to convert a 1080/60i image to 1080/60p within internal PS3 process is planned. This is effective for playback of recorded BD-R/BD-RE.

Furthermore, it is confirmed that direct 1080/24p output through HDMI on BR movie titles to be implemented on future update.

Honestly, I wish these update is completed soon.
