Default Hard to buy these movies

Does anyone else find it hard to convince yourself to buy some movies, I don't know why but alot of movies I want to have in my collection but I can't convince myself into buying due to the fact that I can watch them for free on TV. Like the Kill Bill Volume 1+2 set that's coming out in September, well I love these two movies, but they play them like more then once a month on TV, I know it's not blu ray quality but it's 1080i (I have DirecTV HD), and looks fairly good, with TiVo I can fastforward the commercials. Another thing is that some of these catalog titles you can buy the DVDs for less then $10 and the blu ray will cost almost $35. Like Batman Begins, I was looking in the BestBuy circular and it seems there putting the DVD for sale for $6.99 this week, the same week the bluray comes out. It's hard to rationalize buying the blu ray (in my mind at least). Rebuying movies I already have on DVD is almost impossible for me, the only movie I'm considering rebuying once it comes out are the StarWars movies due to the fact that there my favorite movies and I really want to watch them in high def, but other then that, I can't get myself into the mind of buying many catalog titles at all due to the fact that there played on tv often or that I can buy a DVD for really cheap. What do you guys think about this, also put in consideration that I have owned a blu ray player for 9 months and I own 5 blu rays, so I don't buy tons of movies, also over the last about 11 years I have bought about 30 DVDs, so for the guys here who own 50+ blurays and hundreds of DVDs probably have a very different mind set/budget then I and your opinions might not really be relateable to mine.

I kinda thought the same way as you,as i also have directv and an HD dvr.but i cant stand all the popups tnt and all these channels put up DURING the movie, and in my opinion, the blu ray movies look and SOUND MUCH BETTER, so if its amovie i really like i'll buy it on blu ray and enjoy it more with true dolby hd or hd master dts!!!

I have a hard time convincing myself to buy Blu-rays but for different reasons than mentioned above. I refuse to buy movies on Blu unless they are new titles. I can't see spending that much money for a movie that isn't going to look absolutely spectacular and Blu is just going to accentuate the imperfections of these older titles. (upconverted DVDs can do that just as well) In addition, unless it's an action movie or one that is supposed to have exceptional scenery I'll buy the movie on standard DVD and save the extra $10+.

I dare you to watch Dog Day Afternoon or Omega Man on SD then Blu. Then we will see if you make this statement again. I somehow don't think so.

Same here. I am moving to a new house next month and I don't think I will even get cable. All my tv time goes to Blu-ray and PS3 games.

That being said, I can't stand to watch sd anything and a DVD, even upscaled, just doesn't cut it anymore. I have no problem convincing myself to buy a movie on BD, even if its shown on tv 3 or 4 times a month.

Don't trip Tiggler!
You are REALLY not alone.
Having pristine imperfections is a waste of time - no matter what anyone here tries and bully into us.
I too look for the Blu-ray titles that will show nothing but the best PQ and jaw dropping clarity.
If the Blu-ray is sub-par, I just won't buy it!
I refuse to buy movies just because they are on a BD.

DVDs I will buy in the El Cheapo bins.

I never bought dvd's to begin with. The quality was never good enough, not to mention, alot of dvd's are the "fullscreen" version. However, we have bought alot of blu-rays, with plans to buy many more

I definitely can't watch a movie like Kill Bill on TNT HD. First-off, the popups TNT has are incredibly annoying. Second, commercials. Even if I fast forward it's still a pain. The biggest reason though is the editing. I want to see a movie like it was meant to be, not with dubbed over voice-overs and edited violence.

yeah, I know exactly what you're saying....

I have 1,200 or so DVDs.... so I got into buying a lot for the "collection" aspect, but I repeatedly watch all of them, and like the fact that when someone comes over, and says "I've never seen ****** " I can say.... "Wanna borrow it or watch it" ??? I also enjoy my catalog of titles because I'll be here, and someone (like above) will mention Omega Man, etc... and I'll be inspired to go home and throw it in...... I was just posting in another thread about "The Shining" though, so that'll be watched tonight probably......

But I digress.........

I have 50 or so Blus..... (9 more on the way ) and probably 30 of them I already have on DVD, but unlike you, I don't have HD Cable/Satellite...... I'm going to switch to HD-Only Satellite when we move into our new house (thank you Dish Network for your $30 package) but I also use Netflix..... my wife and I would never justify paying for HBO etc.... same with expensive cell-phones, etc.... we just prioritize what we spend our money on. Although my wife doesn't share the same love for buying movies (she likes Netflix though) we both agree there is NO WAY we'd pay more than $30-$35 a month for cable/satellite...... it's just not worth it to us.

The justification for our HT was mostly because we wanted better speakers for Music..... the theater just "happened" (because I had so many DVDs, it was an obvious necessity)

If you don't feel like you'll get $20 of value from owning a movie..... don't own it..... I certainly don't buy movies "just for the heck of it" and I wouldn't expect anyone else to either.

I'm just curious (not insulting, so please don't take it that way) but how old are you? I started buying DVDs in 1997, and when some discs were released, the PQ/AQ was so revolutionary..... I was HOOKED....... If you just "missed out" on DVD's emergence into the market, then I understand, but all things considering (at least among this group) I'm a late-bloomer in terms of Blu-Ray.

not really. the vast majority of DVDs are anamorphic widescreen. unless you only shop for DVDs at wal-mart.

as for the OP, i'm relatively selective when it comes to buying BDs, mainly due to price. i still buy DVDs, but mostly just older or obscure titles that will likely not see the light of day on BD for many years, if ever. however, when a title comes out on BD and DVD concurrently, i honestly don't even consider the DVD no matter what the price difference. if the BD is too expensive for my blood i will wait it out for a sale, but i don't see the point in purchasing such a title on DVD. additionally, most of the upcoming Blu-ray releases that i'm most excited for are titles i already own on DVD, but will almost definitely double-dip when the price is right.

I agree, your probably very young (15 or younger), due to the fact that DVD had a good 10 years in the market and it would be hard to just "skip" them due to the fact that they were HEAD AND SHOULDERS better then VHS, not as much better then LaserDiscs were but still they stopped those even before. DVDs had better quality then VHS, while not as noticeable of a difference between DVD and BluRay, but the big difference between VHS and DVD (well at least for nonLaserDisc owners) would be that DVDs were widescreen (while full screen was avalible for many DVDs, I think ALL of them had a widescreen version available) and of course SPECIAL FEATURES!!!

I am 38. Had Laserdisc before DVD came out and for me personally, DVD never had the pq or aq to compare to laserdic.

Adding my 2-cents to this duscussion .......... as Iam a firm backer of the Blu-Ray format. I do not chose to buy/re-buy every movie that comes along in the BD format. I have 200+ SD DVD's and will continue to buy them. Although I only buy them when they are of interest to me, (mostly Disney catalog movies for my collection) and are under the $10 cap. If it's something I really want, I'll pay abit more over my cap. But where I decide to buy SD or BD, or even upgrade my SD copy to BD, is based on the BD's spec's. For me to buy a BD, it must be a title of special effects, grand scenery, or off the chart colors. (Pearl Harbor) It must have be of outstanding sound. (Black Hawk Down) Or plainly just be a good action flim that incorporates these features. (Con Air) And just to keep the rest of the fam happy, I occasionally pick-up a BD of their interest so they can also enjoy the Blu-Ray aspect. (Got Gameplan for the kids, Devil Wears Prada for the lil lady, and Ive watched them both more than they have. LOL)
As for pricing? Ive yet to pay over $20 for a BD. Patience does help in this matter, and because of it, I would say I average a purchase price of about $16 a BD. Well thats my insight on this matter, but what matters at the end of the day is, ......... Do YOU feel comfortable/happy with what you spent your money on today??

So even though Bonnie and Clyde was completed restored and looks terrific, you won't buy it because it was made in 1967 and not 2008? You are not a movie fan.
