Default Onkyo receiver + Amazon - service plan?

Hi guys,

I'm so darn close to buying an Onkyo receiver on Amazon. Still trying to decide between 605 and 705.

Is it a good idea to buy the service plans offered? Too pricey? They have a 2 and 4 year plan.

Oh, does anyone have the iPod dock (or better iPod solution)?

Thanks

I just got the 605 today. It sounds incredible with even Dolby Digital surround, and even better with lossless from Blu-rays. The 605 and the 705 are similar; however, I think if you have the extra cash you should get the 705 for the THX certification, the extra HDMI input and the extra power. Oh, and the blue glow on the dial.

EDIT: I haven't heard anything about Amazon's service plans, but I believe if you buy one of those new, it should come with a 2-year warranty from Onkyo.

I definitely would have gotten the 705 except I didn't have the money for it. Also, I know if I decide to upgrade in a few years, I could easily sell the 605 for nearly what I paid for.

I got mine from Ecost (I know, I know) today after ordering it Wednesday night. It came fast! The unit looked like it could be new. And it was a very good price as well.

EDIT: Just updated for grammar. LOL

I'm also researching to get an Onkyo, and I believe it comes with a 2 year warranty from them, so purchasing a 2 year one from Amazon would just be useless, I guess. 4 year might be worth it depending on price.

Sorry to ask a question in your thread Copywriter, but I was wondering if it really is worth the almost 150 more dollars to upgrade to the 705 from the 605. I won't need the extra HDMI. So is the THX certification, power, and this backlit knob worth the 150 dollars?

I haven't owned a 705 before, but I'll do my best here. I think the biggest changes between the 605 and 705 would be the THX certification and the extra HDMI. I decided I didn't need those either, and went with the 605 (and saved a couple hundred in the process!)

If you don't care all that much about those features, the 605 is an excellent choice as well. The way I figured it, I saved between $200-250 by getting the 605 instead of the 705. I'm not going to need the extra HDMI and there are few movies that use THX anyways.

Go with the 605.

EDIT: Don't rule Ecost.com out either. I got a refurbished 605 with a one-year warranty from them in perfect condition for $280 shipped. As I mentioned before, it came in just a few days.

Okay, I won't get the plan.

I'm also debating the 605 v 705. And geez, I've read WAY too much on both.

Think I may go the 605 route, because:

1. I only need 2 HDMI (can hub if needed).

2. I only have 5 speakers and don't plan on adding 2 more for at least a year.

3. THX cert. Eh? Guess I don't know much about it, but I don't have speakers that cost $1000s, so probably won't miss it.

4. I'm scheduling an upgrade in 2 years and at that time I'll spend at least $1,000 or so on the receiver.

5. With the $130ish I'll save from Amazon, I could get the iPod dock and/or some BLUs or put it away from another upgrade.

Anyway, that's my reasoning.

I should point out that I'm using a receiver from a HTIB from about 7 years ago. It's worth about $40 and doesn't even have DTS of any kind.

Good choice. I went with the 605 for the same reasons. BTW, it is a fully capable 7.1 receiver if you wanted to add two more speakers to it.

Yeah, I was browsing the ecost site and saw the low price on the 605 and was intrigued, but then I googled the words, "ecost.com" and "legitmate" and got nothing but negative stuff back. I'm glad it worked out for you, but I'm just a little weary since I'm still in school to get screwed over by something like that. I would be buying it today off Amazon, but I forgot I have to buy contacts for my eyes this week. So next week it is, because I need to have it before all the Rambo movies come out.

Thanks for the help bkbluray, I'll be picking up the 605. Still debating silver or black though lol. (Probably black so it matches stuff.)

Forget the silver.

Looks like the UPS man will be coming to my home on Wednesday. I'm placing my order tonight with overnight shipping.

I've got a party in a couple of weeks and I want to have my PS3, Popcorn Hour and everything rocking.

BTW - I only found out AFTER I ordered that Ecost got such low reviews - but then I looked at them, and saw that most of the complaints were because of attempted returns and cancellations. I saved a hundred dollars from buying it new after I paid for fast shipping, so I figured it was worth the risk. And it was!

Anyways - enjoy the 605! You won't regret your choice.

Yeah, it's tempting. I can get the 605 for $255, which is funny.

How long did they take to ship?

I ordered it last Wednesday night, and got it this morning (Monday). So probably about 3 or 4 days, depending on where you live.

Note that you will have to pay $30 shipping, but you'd still be saving $100.
