Hello All,
First off I would like to say that I have been coming here for quite some time and this place is very informative. Everyone seems to be nice and very helpful. Now to the question. I have searched the forums and think I have found my answer. But I just wanted to confirm it for sure. Is it true that the PS3 80Gig will automatically decode the Dolby True HD? Right now I have the PS3 80gig with the 2.20 firmware. Getting ready to do the 2.30 tonite. Right now I have the PS3 hooked up to a Bose Lifestyle 48. But I am getting ready to get a whole new system with a Onkyo 605. I know that the new firmware 2.30 has the DTS HD MA. just didnt know if the PS3 could always decode the Dolby True HD. Also is it true that the only way to get Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD MA is through a HDMI 1.3 connection? Thanks in advance and I really enjoy looking at the forums. cbm371 Last edited by cbm371; 04-17-2008 at 10:21 PM. |

Yes it's true it has always done so
Yes it's true that you must use HDMI, but it doesn't have to be 1.3 because you're just passing PCM. All decoding is done inside the PS3 Anyone who doesn not have an HDMI reciever can still get the core DD and DTS tracks through optical. PCM will only go through optical as a stereo signal however |

Thanks WickyWoo and Herr.
So really I dont need a receiver that can decode TrueHD or DTS HD MA? Just has to have a HDMI connection to get both HD sounds? Just need a standard surround sound receiver with HDMI connections. I will still probably get the onkyo 605 tho. ![]() Thanks again. cbm371 |

But invest in a receiver with both DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD decoding anyway since the receiver will likely pass 1080p24 video correctly than some older HDMI receivers. Plus you may own a standalone BD player in the future which may not have those decoding capability. fuad |

In the case of a standalone BD player however, it might be a good idea for you to get a receiver that has HDMI 1.3 on it just in case you wanted to bitstream those more advanced codecs (i.e. TrueHD, DTS HD MA) to said receiver. Many here think, myself included, there is a sizeable difference in the decoding capabilities of the player and the receiver with the edge going to the receiver.
