I appologize if this has been covered or answered in another thread but I did use the search function and didn't find this problem or answer.
Ok the problem is when I am watching movies on my Samsung HLT5689S Dlp tv is when the movie gets to a dark scene i can see this glow of light in the middle of the screen and like a half arc halo of light on the screen. Can't see it except during black scenes but is fairly noticable (at least to a picky person like myself). I have had the tv for about a year so could there be a problem with my bulb or set? I checked samsungs help center and they said it is a reflection of light from in the room not from the set. However I can find no light in the room and when the tv is off (and thus has a black screen there is no halo). I have really loved the look of the tv and have been very satisfied with the PQ as blu-rays over the 1080p screen have been so life-like and crisp my family has loved it. So...any ideas? If it is a bad lamp should I just get another or should i just live with it? If this is a common problem with Dlp I wouldn't mind throwing this tv in another room or entertainment room and getting a newer plasma. Advice from someone with experience with this would be greatly appreciated. |

I don't exactly know what you mean by a hot spot but if it is it is a pretty damn big hot spot. The screen is 56" and the halo is like a majority of the right part of the screen. It is kinda like when you shine a flashlight on your hand or something and can see the glow.

Do you have lights on in front of the television that shine light directly into the screen of the TV? It is probably a reflection of ambient room light off the mirror inside the tv. The screen is transparent and will also allow light to shine INTO the television as well as out. I have a rear projection TV and have no lights shining directly into the front of the television when watching it. All light is either behind the TV or has shades to keep direct light from entering the front of the television.

yeah..i have tried everything. pitch black. i even turned off the all other electronic equipment like my surround sound and everything to make sure it is coming from the tv. there is nothing i can find that would leave a reflection of light on the tv. i am pretty sure it is coming from the tv itself. kinda like there is someone behind the tv shining a flashlight through it. i get a pretty big (but dull) ball of light in the center with a half kinda halo of light on the right side (kinda like an eclipse). it is only evident in dark scenes. like i said. tv off no light....and with all ambient room light eliminated i still get it. i really am pretty sure it is from the tv somehow.

I think it is the light engine that is starting to fail.
I had a 3 years old Samsung DLP TV which exhibit a similar problem except that it has the "glowing light" at the bottom left hand corner of the screen, and visible in dark scenes. The technican that came told me it is the lighting engine that has started to fail. If it is still under warranty have it replaced. |

I have seen this myself, my question to you is how do you have your tv setup... Is it eye level with where you sit, or lower, higher? Its actually the lamps inside the set, and can only be seen on my set if I'm looking down on the set close up, or off to the side quiet a bit, from all the 160 degrees around the set at eye level or 45 degrees up or down, its invisible... i have a mitsu, but it sort of looks like a half moon in the center of the screen, if i'm up close and looking down on the screen |

well i can't see it at all angles but i can at all normal viewing angles. my tv is slightly above my sitting level and is normally viewed about 12' away straight on. i would imagine it is possibly the lamp but didn't want to admit to it. the tv is over a year old now and is past warranty. so would a new lamp fix it or if it is a light engine can i replace that faily easily and about how much is that. i don't like wasting money on something if it is a common problem with this tv every few years when i can just buy a plasma and be done with it.
i was on a budget when i bought the tv (married) but no longer being married and making and keeping more money than i ever have in my life i could just buy a new plasma tv and wait on replacing my surround sound system till christmas. |

By right, you should not see any glowing light or halo on the screen and if does, something is wrong. DLP basically works by shinning a light thru a color wheel and reflect them on the screen thru a series of mirrors to recreate the picture on the screen. I would guess it is most lightly the light engine problem bec your description sounds similar to mine and it doesn't appear when the TV is brand new. It is best you asked a Samsung technician to come and accurately diagnose your TV to see what's the problem. We are basically all guesing what's wrong. If it is indeed the light engine, then unfortunately replacing it esp after warranty is going to be expensive. The last time Samsung checked on mine ( warranty also expired ), replacing this "light engine" cost more than a thousand dollars. In the end, I decide to trade-in my TV and upgrade to a plasma. |
