Default All tower speakers!?

Alright. well... Every time i mention this idea to anyone- they look at me like im completely retarded.

Im just wondering what your guy's opinion on this would be?

An onkyo 605 using 6 tower speakers and a center speaker... Whats the problem with this? and why does everyone think im insane?

I think it would not only look amazing (the look of the speakers surrounding me. It would look super high-tech and expensive), but sound amazing as well since no matter where your sitting the speakers will be pointing at you. Smaller speakers would have to point at the couch in the area where your sitting. With all towers, I could lay down on the roof (?) and still have sound being blasted in my general direction since they are so large.

What do you guys think?

You've come to the right place. Towers all around me and it is dynamic as Hell. You are not insane. I am.

The truth is towers for surrounds is probably overkill. I would take the extra money towers cost and invest it in higher quality bookshelf speakers. That is just my opinion though.

I prefer dipoles for surrounds and rears as they produce better sound motion due to the speakers being on either side of the enclosure.

If you want to do it and like the idea so much, go for it! I think most objections come from the fact that surrounds are for directional accenting and rear surrounds even more so. As a result they don't necessarily need the range your fronts require (as they produce most the sound).

I say try it out, if you like the way it sounds, great. If not, take some of the towers back and buy surrounds (saving yourself some dough in the process). 6 towers would certainly fill out a room when using the specific yet enigmatically named "All Channel Stereo" mode.

I say go for it all the way. We are not watching DVDs anymore where only pitiful compressed sound effects are trickling out of the surrounds. There is some major hz dynamic range with HD sound now.

When you hear a powerful jet go screaming from front to back, the dynamics stay the same creating a seamless transition from speaker to speaker.

Hahahaha. I like all of your comments alot better than everyone else's .

Anyway- the only thing stopping me is the fact that im completely broke.
Ill find a way around that though.

Thanks guys. You've convinced me.

Oh, and Marcus-
You said you have all tower speakers, right? How much was that? Cause i have no idea how much tower speakers normally are.
I got my two front ones from a friend for free. They are rather good speakers... Technics SB-T200. Pretty old, but still sound good enough.

Ill do some research on tower speakers tonight.

EDIT: Does anyone have any ideas of what one's to get? I wont be doing this for a while since, again - im broke.
I dont really exactly have a budget which makes this incredibly hard to ask. Especially since im completely clueless on speaker prices.
Basically, whats are (some) tower speaker(s) i can possibly get for.... as little as possible.
Sorry for the lack on info on a budget... I make a little more than minimum wage, so just keep that in mind. Im pretty patient though... i can save.

Still.... if anyone has any objections - feel free.

My two front Infinity Powered speakers were $1250.00 each. Center Channel was $650.00 and I have Two (non-powered) Infinity Tower Speakers.

I would save for a quality matching (non-powered) speakers for the front L & R with brand matching center channel and move your two Technics to the surround positions.

I forgot to add that I would recommend Boston Accoustic Towers for the front left and right. There is some remarkable sound from these at an amazing price. Check on Amazon. I don't remember the model number, but any BA tower with a decent amount of speakers (Min of 3) sound very impressive in their price range. I've heard these demoed. Can't beat the quality for the price.

LOL , I was checking out some tower's the other day at the hi Fi shop , And if I was going to do this kind of set up I would go with the Klipsch setup as follows ,

Klipsch - RF- 82's for the front Left & Right $999. PR

Klipsch - RF- 62's for the rears Surr's $799.PR.

Klipsch - RF- 52's for the side Surr's $599. PR

Klipsch - RC- 62 for Center $499

klipsch - RW- 12d for the Sub. $699.

total cost around $3,400.00

This system would more than rock you'r world. trust me it would be mind blowing .

Damn. uhh.... heh. Damn.

Expensive.
I was expecting the prices of speakers to be one heck of alot cheaper then what you guys are saying i should get. ...like, 2 times cheaper.

Ha. oh well... I suppose i can always save. But man. ...So much for food.
This'll be my goal for after i get my macbook pro. I suppose i could always go get 2 towers for now... just as surf speakers and use my current surf's as backs.

My back speakers at the moment are the cheapest pieces of garbage ever. They were taken from a 50 dollar CD player from a good 5 years ago... haha. That was temporary just to hear what 7.1 sounded like.
I think it would be awkward having everything towers except for the back speakers though, you know what i mean?
Oh well... Ill figure this out. Thanks again by the way everyone.
(Or, as marcus said - use my current towers as the surfs and get me some new front speakers... Whatever works)

I have 3 tower speakers across the front (Snell E-II's) very dynamic, I'm using 4 bipoles for the sides and rear. Go for it!

those prices are way too high.
You can get four RF82s for $1600 shipped
RC 62 for $320 shipped
RW10d $400 shipped.
RF62s would only be around $1200 shipped, thats for four though

You've got ideas, and that's great and all..... but what "I" would do, if I were "you"

Use the money to get good quality speakers, and upgrade your receiver.

There are dipole surrounds for $1,000/each that will be easier to set up/adjust, and direct sound better than a $2,000 tower you decide to use as a surround.

Bottom line, they design speakers specifically for surrounds, and you should probably stick with that route........

I'm not sure why you want speakers that "look expensive" though.

yeah you could get some nice surround speakers decently priced.
I know klipsch has some RS42s,RS52s, and RS62s that are nice.
Paradigm makes some great ones also.

Default Towers for surrounds?

I prefer switchable bipole/dipole for surrounds. I've found the diffuse soundfield much more emersive than in my other system (with identical bookshelf speakers for L/R/surrounds). Not sure if there are towers that have that capability.

While it may look cool, I agree with the post saying it's probably overkill. The surrounds don't work as hard as the fronts, and if it were me I'd invest more in the front/center/sub instead.
