Default The secret 2007 CES

I'm Certain there is more out there, but it's hard to find. Even the Blu-ray backers must think the CES was a bit thin, except for the big announcements, here is what else was going on. I'm certain there is more out there. Please add, but don't use blogs as a reference as many contain misinformation - to be polite. I haven't come across this here, although appologises if I'm repeating news.

If I remember correctly (from the other thread) that Hitachi also displayed at CES a 250GB....

Oh that was Ritek :P

Still this 100GB Blu-ray device seems that Blu-ray is indeed leading the push over HD-DVD for the PC market.

Only real thing that needs commenting is that HD VOD is becoming more viable... FTTP/FTTH has respectable saturation in the Japanese market already, and it's starting implementation in the US.

Somehow I posted this in the wrong thead... Umm. Ok, I'm Insane and Crazy.

In the states only Verizon has committed to FiOS, and they are only allowed 10 states. AT&T are still going to be using ADSL for the main bulk of their network as they are only doing FTTN (fibre to the node) so speeds will still only ever be at a maximum of 10mbit. Comapre that to 100Mbit being introduced by Verizon and other FiOS companies around the world, these people will never get HD on demand. Companies like AT&T are basically a monopoly and the FCC are too scared of taking them on, so they get away with making stupid decisions, cheaping out and not doing FiOS.

The same was going to happen in the UK, but BT finally came to their senses along with the cable company and decided that DOCSIS 3+/FiOS was the way to go, allowing speeds of 100Mbit per household in less than 5 years.

Actually, on the Show floor Bluray was everywhere in the main central hall.

From Sony through Sharp, Pioneer, Hitachi, Philips, Samsung, Panasonic, and of course the infamous LG dual player.

There was also the BDA that had all kinds of hardware and software on show. They had the HP drive (wasn't HP one of the key steals for HD DVD when they put an OEM drive in a PC? Here they had internal and external BD drives with HD branding!) as well as pretty much all the players and all the studios represented. They also had Ulead, Sonic, etc and last but not least a blank media wall.

Media was also seen at Maxell and Verbatim (though both also showed HD DVD media).

HD DVD had Toshiba.

And the truck.

And LG's dual player.

That is pretty much it (aside from media from Maxell and Verbatim).

As you can imagine, the BD side pretty much swamped the HD DVD side.

These are the things that most people saw and experienced. The reality is that most people AT CES see these kinds of things. Everyone else relies on press releases and show coverage - it is just not the same.

The player that isn't and HD DVD player, and they refuse to allow to be logoed as an HD DVD player, but they're talking up as an HD DVD player.

THAT is desperation.

I remember when HP made the joint press statement some time late 2004/early 2005 hinting that the BDA had lied to them about the BD plans. Of course that VP at MS played it up:to paraphrase "We let them know what the BDA doesn't want them to know". That was one of the bigger hits that the BDA had endured.

But now you're saying HP is back on friendly terms? Especially after the HD-DVD releasing a burner months after BD has done so? HP should GROVEL BACK!

Microsoft convinced HP that their margins would be a lot better with HD DVD. And then Microsoft took out the legs of HD DVD by releasing a PC compatible EXTERNAL drive for $199.

You'll note the HP HD DVD external retail drive is nowhere to be found. It's merely a $250 internal drive option to their PCs.
