Taiwan Kolin to produce BD players, says paper

Taiwan Kolin, a Taiwan-based maker of LCD TVs and electrical home appliances, will start production of Blu-ray Disc (BD) players between the third and fourth quarter of 2008, with pick-up heads and chipsets to be supplied by Sharp, according to the Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) newspaper.

The BD player will be sold in the Taiwan market at below NT$30,000 (US$977). In addition, Taiwan Kolin will produce the BD player on an ODM basis for Syntax-Brillian, which will market it in the US and other markets under its Olevia brand, the EDN cited Taiwan Kolin president Frank Lee as saying.

Yeah, I have only ever seen Olevia TVs at K-Mart and Wal-Mart.

Lol, 46 inch Olevia LCDs are like $800. The BD player better have some wicked specs!

I love Olevia. I bought my 27" for $299 on sale at Fry's last year with no tuner and 1080i. My Olevia is way better than my dad's - not sure which brand he has - but he paid upwards of $1,300. He even complains that the HD picture and clarity on my LCD is better than his.

The only reason I am going to replace this TV eventually is for a bigger size and 1080p.

I'm sure they'll sell boatloads of them at US$977 but it does say "at below" that price so maybe it will really be US$199.

I agree I made Kmart take back my Vizio in exchange for the Olevia.One of the best things is that it has no motion blur or haloing
