Is the backwards compatibility better on the 80Gb, 60Gb, or about the same for the different PS3s? I have PS1 and PS3 games that I just can't part with so backwards compatibility is pretty important to me. I checked each of my old games on Sony's site and they all look like there have been no problems found running on the systems, but I was wondering if either 60 or 80 does it better?

The NTSC 60GB and 20GB models have both the processor and the GPU of the PS2.
The PAL 60GB only has the GPU. 80GBs don't have either and use software emulation. 40GB don't have anything. |

No the processing for upscaling between the two is identical.
The 60GB has over 99% BC. The 80GB you should check individual titles. Some have frame rate issues, some have menu issues, etc. http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/09/80...compatibility/ You can enter a game title here (http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus) to check compatibility status with either the 60GB or 80GB models. |

Anyone think that BC will be made better by future updates? I don't think BC has been one of Sony's biggest issues right now, I know that they've been doing a lot for the Blu-ray updates like HD-MA and such. Anybody have any word?

I highly doubt they will do any more with BC, especially since they took it out of the 40. Which is too bad, because I gave up playing Star Ocean: TEOT recently because it does, in fact, have issues with a PS3 (on a 60gb) and the website says it's fine. So the Sony website is no guarantee of how the game will actually work, FYI.

someone from Gamestop told me the new 80 will have no BC...I'm pretty sure I already knew that but could be wrong...

Gamestop also told me last month that the MGS4 Bundle was coming out April 28th, so I can't trust them anymore. Has that been confirmed? Why wouldn't that 80Gb include backwards compatibility like the other 80Gb models before it??

Edit: buy.com lists the date as 4/21 but I believe this is when it was setup for preorder: http://www.buy.com/prod/playstation-...207932546.html Last edited by SoCalTiger; 05-03-2008 at 04:12 PM. |

I had a conversation with the gamestop manager and he said that it was released that day. I then told him that I was sure it was coming out June 12th, then he said his Sony rep even told him that the bundle was coming out early on April 28th. Anyway, I was only brining it up because I can't trust Gamestop workers now. Now, I am concerned about this new 80Gb backwards compatibility issue. Is anyone able to confirm that it for sure will not be?

Since the OP did not mention that they have PS2 games, only PS1 and PS3 (unless there was a typo and you meant PS2) any PS3 will work for you. They all play PS1 games. The PS2 hardware that is in the 60gb is not needed for PS1 play back. It is true that the 80gb plays PS2 games through software emulation. The 40gb will not play PS2 games as it is not enabled to do the software emulation but will still play PS1 games. You can even use remote play via your PSP to play PS1 Disc that are in your PS3.
To check which games are BC with the 60gb and 80gb PS3, you can go to this website. http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus and select which PS3 then just type in the game title. I hope the MGS4 80gb is the same as the one that was discontinued as many people still want BC support. If Sony takes that out, they are crazy. |
