Thanks for organizing this. When it comes to pre-70s Horror, I have a lot of work to do. Since I couldn't even name ten good ones that I've seen. This list is the perfect guideline.

Great list, although I am a little bummed out no Mario Bava films or Val Lewton productions made it to the top 20, but at least Black Sunday and Cat People were pretty close; on the other hand this reminds me I really need to watch the 1956 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, as well as the 1933 version of King Kong; thank you for posting the results.

Those are both great movies. I need to watch a few I've missed on this list as well, so in fact this is a public service list

Thanks guys. As you can see, our top 20 actually became a top 23 as there were a few ties. I kind of think that's a good thing, as it brings attention to a few more titles that would have gone unmentioned otherwise.

Two members, octagon and jupiter123, posted incomplete lists. Jupiter's was close enough to complete (19 movies) that I counted it like all the others, while octagon's three picks counted for 1 point each.

That was one of the ideas behind it. If it gets even just one person to check some of these movies out, it was worth doing.

I have plans for another one of these threads, but that won't be until in a few months, probably spring or summer (unless someone else gets to it before me, I guess). One reason is we have enough of them going right now as is, another is they take a lot of work so I'm not in a hurry to throw myself into another right away. It's fun, but time-consuming.

Wow! The first of these lists where barely any of my choices placed. I only had five make it into the Top 20 and another four that were runner-ups, and the rest didn't make it at all.

1. Psycho (1960) [#1]
2. The Thing From Another World (1951) [#15]
3. Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) [#18]
4. Strait-Jacket (1964) [#-]
5. House on Haunted Hill (1959) [#-]
6. The Last Man on Earth (1964) [#-]
7. The Devil Rides Out (1968) [#-]
8. Carnival of Souls (1962) [#16]
9. The Pit and the Pendulum (1961) [#26]
10. Black Sunday (1960) [#22]
11. The Tingler (1959) [#-]
12. Them! (1954) [#39]
13. House of Wax (1953) [#28]
14. Horror of Dracula (1958) [#19]
15. Godzilla (1954) [#33]
16. Scrooge (1951) [#-]
17. 13 Ghosts (1960) [#-]
18. The Bat (1959) [#-]
19. The Plague of the Zombies (1966) [#-]
20. White Zombie (1932) [#-]

I managed to revisit or see for the first time most of the classic Universal Monster movies in October but never got around to going back and adding any to this list. I'm surprised to see The Bride of Frankenstein ranked so high, as I didn't think it was that good. At least Carnival of Souls made it to the Top 20, though. Kind of wasn't expecting it to make the list at all since it doesn't seem that well known.

Awesome list, thanks for the work, MechaGodzilla! Pleased to see Night of the Demon in there, I only got to watch it this October but I enjoyed the heck out of it. Can totally see how it influenced Drag Me to Hell.

All except two of the movies on my list made the top 40, so I'm pretty pleased.

I too was glad to see Night of the Demon make it into the top 20. A great film, and one I really need to pick up on Blu-ray...

Seen 12 from the list overall:
  • Dracula (1958)
  • The Night of the Hunter
  • Les Diaboliques (Diabolique)
  • Les Yeux Sans Visage (Eyes Without a Face) - this would have been my Number 1 film.
  • Repulsion
  • Peeping Tom
  • The Innocents
  • King Kong
  • The Birds
  • Night of the Living Dead
  • Rosemary's Baby
  • Psycho

Thanks for the work Mechagodzilla.

Great work, Mecha, and thanks!

A little irked to see Psycho at no.1, as I had a funny feeling it would be in the top spot, but having watched it again a few weeks ago it's just not as brilliant as it's made out to be by critics. Very good, but not great. Just IMHO of course!
