Default Car people... which would you get?

I'm already pretty settled on one of these, but I just wanted to gather opinions since, 1) I'm curious and 2) I'm bored

So . . . between the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X or the BMW 135i, which would you get and why? It's going to be awhile before I'm buying, but I like to start my research WAY early

BMW's seem to be more reliable to me. I think the BMW looks nicer too

BMW's are actually notorious for their UN-reliability. Their free maintenance is a very nice perk. Sweet deal not to have to pay for brake pads, oil changes, windshield wipers, etc.

I'm back and forth on the looks. Part of me prefers the aggressive look of the Evo, and part of me likes the sleek, sleeper-ish looks of the Bimmer.

The 135i would be a load of fun, but it's got quite the price tag for such a small car, and I hear that there have been issues with that twin turbo setup, not to mention BMW's less than stellar reliability track record. I'm not really a heavy fan of the new Evo either, though. Do you plan on keeping the vehicle past it's warranty expiration?

I know you weren't asking for other options, but have you considered picking up a CPO E46 M3? You could probably pick one up with low miles and extended CPO powertrain warranty. If I was dumping high 30s into a play vehicle, that would be the one for me!

By the way, finally an interesting 'off topic' discussion!

The older body style M3 is one of my favorite cars, but I have a hard time buying used. I'm really picky about chips and paint flaws (every new car I've had has had clear bra put on it before I drive it on a daily basis). Plus, they're still a little pricey, and their performance for the dollar is still pretty steep. I've driven one, and don't get me wrong it's a very, VERY nice car, but it's slow for what it costs. If I could get an 06 with low miles for like . . . 32, I'd really consider it, but in the shape I would want, that would never happen.

Just for everybody's FYI, my last car was an Evo IX . . . so I'm leaning heavily toward the Evo X I have a company car that I use for commuting, so when the new whip comes, it'll be a fun car that isn't driven on a daily basis. I'm also looking at doing some auto x-ing, so . . . again, the Evo. But the BMW is still so enticing! No limited slip though

Different strokes for different folks. RWD sport/lux vs AWD raw peformer is apples to oranges for me. However, the Evo X is taking baby steps towards sport/lux, which will help widen the target market.

Um, that's not been my experience, nor is this borne out by J.D. Powers' 2007 results: http://www.jdpower.com/corporate/new...spx?ID=2007130

BMW ranked #7 with 182 problems per 100 vehicles
Mitsubishi ranked #22 with 228 problems per 100 vehicles

I wouldn't touch any other Mitsubishi than the Evo . . . they're still 100% built in Japan and very special attention is paid to those cars . . . very few reliability issues with the Evos that aren't caused by abuse.

But . . . I wouldn't get any other Mitsu to save my life.

I've been to a few Bimmer forums, and even a lot of the members there have complained about reliability. Luck, I guess.

Enjoy buying your BMW. Every dealership I've ever dealt with makes you feel like they're doing you a favor by selling it, meaning that they're conditioned to treat you like dirt.

I just don't know how anyone can get through life without a pickup truck.

The one BMW dealership I've been to was exactly like that. Needless to say, I wouldn't be purchasing anything from them.

You are thinking of Mercedes and Audi, i remember last year going down to jersey and observing who is broke down with the hood up, amazing 3 c class cars all newer waiting for a tow, and 2 Audi's with a Toyota mixed in on a 5 hour drive.

The problem with BMW is the horrific over priced parts and mechanics that charge more then brain surgeons! Once repairs are on your dime is when it's time to ditch the BMW, i would never buy one for just that fact alone.

Getting a bit off topic, but I couldn't imagine spending upwards of 50k for a new auto and being worried that it could possibly just crap on you on the freeway. My 4Runner Limited V8 might guzzle the gas like it's going out of style, but she never so much as hiccups on the road (or off the road!). And with a little girl on the way, reliability and safety go hand in hand.

After Reading your other thread........ since you have an hour and fifteen minute commute each way.... I'd get a TDI JETTA, and start enjoying that 50 MPG !!!!!!! Why get anything nice, you're gonna pile on miles, and those VWs go FOREVER (we're getting my wife one) My brother is on his second.... 230,000 miles, and it still gets 48/49 MPG

I use my company car for the workhorse. This one will be a toy of sorts. I'll drive it when the wife and I are going on little sprints around town, but not back and forth to work. My old Evo had about 25k on it in not much more than a year doing that crap. Luckily I'll have the luxury of having a car that's just used for work.

I'd get a GT500 or a Z06, but those are a bit more than what I want to spend. I'd consider a used Z06, but as I said before, I don't think I could buy a car of this type used. I can't think of any other U.S. cars that are interesting.
