Default HP HDX audio capabilities

What is the HDX capable of as far as audio goes? I mean, could i hook it up to a big screen tv and home theater system and get TrueHD, HDDTS, or other premium sound? Is there anything i could do on a stand alone dvd player that i couldn't do on the HDX??

Thanks,

Phil

I guess it's really up to the program you are using. I use PowerDVD Ultra.
It does output 4.1 Sound (subwoofer under), but mine is hooked to 7.1 speaker.
It got 4 ports for audio alone at the back of the laptop

I forgot.... there is also HDMI port, which allows you to output audio and video.
but PowerDVD can't output on HDMI. If you intend to use HDMI, use HP QuickPlay (or alternatively, Get WinDVD 8 BD). Mind that I never actually use HDMI, but I noted from "Sound" properties of Control Panel, that HDMI outputs 2 channel.

what about like an actual home theater system with a reciever and satellite speakers? Is there any way to hook it up like you would a normal blu-ray dvd player to a home theater system? I didn't see an optical out or anything.

i can't see optical out, but here is what you can expect:
3 jacks in front: 2 for headphone (with SPDIF out), one microphone

or

an audio jack and S-VIDEO, which can only be used with HP QuickPlay. (480/576i) - mine is 576, obviously because it's PAL.

or

HDMI port

or

4 audio jacks for 7.1 speakers

Now, the following, you can expect from SOund option:

w_tanoto, is that screens taken from an actual HDX?

Because I am very interested in buying a HP HDX, but I am having alot of problems finding information regarding if it has SPDIF Out. One person stated that is does not have SPDIF Out and the only digital audio output is through HDMI, but I find that quite hard to believe.

So, can anyone confirm for me that the HP Pavilion HDX actually has SPDIF Out? Should be a regular 3,5mm stereojack, which can be used with a 3,5mm - RCA cable.

hi.

yes, it is taken from my HDX. I don't actually use SPDIF Out. I use those 4 ports at the back to produce 7.1 sound. From what I know, there are 3 plugs in front of the laptop, one of them for microphone, two of them for headphone. AFAIK, one of the plug for headphone has SPDIF --> as other laptop with 2 headphone plug will do, but it's unspecified. I think you may be able to plug in into one of them and get SPDIF.

I mailed HP though, it seems that both of them are just regular analog headphone jacks.

ha...... you e-mailed HP??? Their answer is rubbish. I used to ask if a Pavilion HDX if the spec for a model is right. it stated that the resolution is 1280xsomething, but then I saw WUXGA (full hd) or something like that. meaning that is not possible. and they said the resolution is correct. don't trust HP e-mail. that is my advise. not only that. trust me, I've been HP's loyal customer for more than a decade. I have experienced their stupidity. I own 5 PC and Laptops from them. Their product is of quality, but their service centre is rubbish.

but, this time, I might have to agree with them: no SPDIF.

I knew that, that is why I e-mailed two different persons at HP and also asked in many different forums. And it all comes to the same answer, only digital audio output is through HDMI.
