Default Grainy Blu-ray?

I just got my Ps3 and have played 3 blu ray discs and I don't notice anything amazing about the picture at all. In fact, it is comparable to a regular dvd, if that! I have a brand new 42" inch HDTV LCD Sharp Aquos.
Am I doing something wrong. I am reading all these websites and posts about how incredible the blu ray on ps3 looks. I have tried all the video picture settings. I have a HDMI hooked up. I have watched Monster House, John Legend Concert, and Crash and I don't notice a thing picture quality wise. The picture has been a bit grainy. Please help if you can give me any suggestions.
Thanks
Joe

Well, first return the TV for a Sony Bravia or Samsung

Seriously, the picture settings of your TV must be tweaked. Too high sharpness or contrast or brightness can degrade the image.

(But only half kidding about getting another LCD)

Default check HDMI out settings

Go to settings and make sure that the Blu-ray out settings are set to the correct input resolution for your tv. It should be set to 780p or 1080i if it is at 480i/p then that is a issue

There is definately too much film grain visible in some movies, at least on my 106" projection screen.

I agree. Some movies are better than others. Black Hawk Down, Talladega Nights, and many others, have obvious film grain. Thats because they make these blurays from...you guessed it...FILM! I hear Crank looks amazing though, so definitely go check out/rent other titles!

Crank is absolutely gorgeous. I thought Training Day looked really good as well. I've read on here Kingdom of Heaven looked good too. So definitely check out some other flicks.

Default grain

I'm running 1080i through HDMI then to VGA into a Loewe CRT. Now, because the VGA in my set is just a passthrough - it doesn't do any processing at all, the picture quality on say, Fifth Element Blu-Ray compared to the Superbit upconverted to 1080i (same input) is not massive but the Blu-Ray looks more like a photograph. Grain has mostly to do with the film stock used. It's a natural assumption to think all Hi-Def discs will be of the same quality but they can't. Depending on film stock used as well as Post production techniques that the director wants - take a look at the SD Miami Vice for a prime example... low IRE scenes have high grain compared to day scenes which are even a bit too soft - all these things make up the look and feel of the piece. That's why it's considered an art form really. All in all, make all your settings on your display neutral and go from there. There are subtle shades of colors and dead solid edges that you should be experiencing with Blu-Ray and yes, through the PS3.

YMMV from title to title.

MonsterHouse has Grain intentionally put over the CG, I was underwhelmed with the PQ myself. It looks good, but not great.

Crash is an Indy film and it is what it is...It looks so so on cable HD, & Blu-Ray... but still better than DVD.

John Legend concert I cannot personally comment on, but i hear it is grainy because of dark scenes, that is inherent in any dark scene...you will get "Video Noise".

Try these titles:
Crank
Transporter 2
MI:3
Ice Age Meltdown
The Wild
Ultraviolet
Underworld EVO
Tears of the sun
Black Hawk Down
EightBelow
The Searchers
Last Samurai
Swordfish

You will walk away feeling like your $600 was well spent after those.

gowacj,
I had the same problem when i first bought my player last week, than i called sony's 800 number and they helped me set it up.I had to plug my bluray player into the HD part of my tv {video 5 on my sony bravia tv} then change the settings to 1080i.Right afterwards I noticed the improvement bigtime and some movies do look grainy but others like superman returns are soft in places but look incredible.try to find the settings on your tv or ps3 and change to 1080i.
