Default Advice on my HDTV situation

I have a Mitsubishi 55" widescreen projection tv that supports 1080i but was purchased pre-HDMI. I want to get a blu-ray player (was looking at the Sony S300) but my dilemma is that I dont know if the picture will be as great as I want it to be without HDMI. Also someone at Best Buy has informed me that upconversion on standard dvds wont work without HDMI (Probably the main reason I didnt buy one that day).

I am planning on purchasing a new plasma TV by the end of summer, but I would just like an opinion on wither I should hold off on blu-ray until then. Thank you.

i personally would hold off until the end of summer.....a whole new slew of bd players will be out by then with profile 2.0, unless of course you buy a PS3 to be your bd player as that is already profile 2.0

Thanks Rob. Ive watched a little of showroom tvs and I know that it wont be as good as 1080p. Thats why ultimately I am gonna get 1080p in the end. But if my tv can still show a much better picture on blu-ray then dvd, ill get the blu-ray now and then the tv later. Im just worried on dropoff of audio/visual not having HDMI

If you have an HDMI receiver that accepts audio over HDMI, then you can take advantage of the HD audio codecs available on Blu-ray, while still using the same set. Just get an hdmi to dvi converter from a place like:

...you should look at the Sony BDP-S350 or the Panasonic DMP-BD50 instead.
