Default C/NET: Dispatches from the format war: HD DVD vs. Blu-ray

Developments in the Blu-ray/HD DVD format war kicked into high gear in the past couple of months. November and December saw the bulk of the long-delayed HD product lines finally hitting store shelves: Blu-ray players from Sony, Panasonic, and Philips; the PlayStation 3; the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on; and the second-generation Toshiba HD DVD players. In the new year, both camps came out swinging at CES 2007. With so much news to process, John Falcone has taken the opportunity to collect all the major developments into one easily digestible chunk. Dig in.

I would like someone in the media to start to flake apart why MS is promoting HD-DVD. He makes a starting point at it but sadly lets it go. My advice is to find a "deep throat" and I do not mean porn.

We are manipulated by media groups (PR reps) on both sides. I would like to hear a first hand account of how a journalist dealt with being swayed into a position. I want to know names and what the people involved did. The story about a new Ferrari laptop computer from MS was very interesting to read. I didn't find that article interesting. I already knew everything that was in the piece.

Default Not too shabby

Not a bad overview, but...

"After years of false promises, so-called digital delivery is finally becoming a reality. Industry heavy hitters Microsoft (Xbox 360 Video Marketplace) and Apple (iTunes Store) are already offering movies and TV shows in DVD and true HD quality, and the online options will only multiply as broadband bandwidth continues to expand."

I don't know of any service that is currently allowing online purchase of 1080p movies. Is there one? Neither Microsoft nor Apple do so as far as I know.

And bandwidth will expand, but more slowly in the U.S. than many of the "movie download" fanboys will like to admit. I predict that the average U.S. family won't have the required bandwidth for at least five years (2012) at the earliest and ten year (2017) most likely.
